Anthropic introduces Claude Tag, a perpetual AI assistant that resides in your Slack channels.
Anthropic has introduced Claude Tag, a continuous AI feature for Slack that actively monitors conversations, learns context, and proactively flags updates and tasks. Currently in research preview, Claude Tag functions as a consistent AI partner within Slack. Users can mention @Claude to gain insights during discussions and assign tasks. This feature is available today for Claude Enterprise and Claude Team customers.
Claude Tag enhances Anthropic's existing Slack integrations, which previously allowed users to message Claude directly or tag it for instant assistance. In Slack, Claude Code facilitates the management of coding tasks from mentions in channels to full coding sessions online, posting updates back into the thread. However, Claude Tag introduces ongoing context and memory that previous tools lacked.
According to Anthropic, "As Claude follows along with its channel, it learns ever more about the work." Claude is capable of collecting information from various organizational channels if given permission to access them, resulting in an AI that builds institutional knowledge over time instead of starting anew with each interaction.
Every member of a Slack channel can interact with a single Claude identity, allowing them to see Claude's contributions and continue discussions from where another left off. System administrators determine which tools, information, and channels each Claude identity can access, ensuring that each identity remains limited to specified channels. For instance, a Claude set up for legal tasks cannot transfer memories to the engineering channel.
When given a task, Claude Tag divides it into steps and completes them using available tools, responding in the Slack thread with its output. One standout feature is its ambient mode, which actively engages in discussions to keep teams informed, highlight relevant information from the organization, and remind users about overlooked threads or tasks.
This ambient mode differentiates Claude Tag from standard chatbots, as it does not wait to be prompted. Instead, Claude observes its assigned channels and intervenes when it believes a team would benefit from a reminder, summary, or relevant context from another area of the company. Anthropic claims this creates an experience akin to "working with a real colleague, capable of delivering work in public view, with considerably more context and understanding than before."
Organizational context has become a key focus for enterprise AI. Microsoft is developing Work IQ, an intelligence layer through Copilot that utilizes Microsoft Graph to comprehend roles, collaboration patterns, and organizational structure. Startups like Viktor have secured substantial funding to directly integrate AI coworkers within Slack and Teams.
Glean has recently achieved over $300 million in annual recurring revenue with a valuation of $7 billion by constructing a permissions-aware knowledge graph that serves as a bridge between the AI model and enterprise data.
Claude Tag represents Anthropic’s strategy to this challenge, adopting a more focused approach compared to broader intelligence layers across all enterprise applications. It aims to embed the AI where the majority of knowledge work occurs: team chat. The idea is that a persistent presence in Slack, along with cross-channel memory and admin-controlled boundaries, will allow for the accumulation of the context necessary for a functional AI agent.
The implications for privacy are significant. An always-on AI that observes workplace conversations and autonomously determines when to engage will likely face scrutiny from both employees and compliance teams. While Anthropic provides admin-scoping controls as a structural solution, the real challenge will arise when enterprise clients implement it on a larger scale and observe worker reactions to an always-listening AI.
Anthropic has indicated it is working on extending Claude Tag to additional platforms in the coming weeks, but for now, its functionality is limited to Slack, which, while restricting its reach, also simplifies its complexity—a conscious choice for a research preview.
