LinkedIn opportunity results in World Cup debut for Cape Verde.

Roberto 'Pico' Lopes, a defender for Shamrock Rovers born in Dublin, was approached for a place on Cape Verde’s national team through a LinkedIn message he initially thought was a joke. He made history by starting in Cape Verde’s inaugural World Cup match on June 15, 2026, which ended in a 0-0 draw against Spain in Atlanta. This narrative underscores how a platform intended for professional networking led to an unexpected international football opportunity.

Typically, LinkedIn messages result in sales attempts, recruiter spam, or polite declines. However, Lopes received a World Cup invitation.

The Shamrock Rovers defender achieved a milestone on Monday when he played for Cape Verde against Spain in their first-ever World Cup match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, where they impressively held the European champions to a 0-0 draw.

      The message he nearly disregarded

In 2019, Rui Aguas, the former coach of Cape Verde, found that Lopes had a Cape Verdean father and sent him a LinkedIn message in Portuguese. Lopes overlooked it, thinking it was just junk.

Nine months later, Aguas reached out again, this time in English. Lopes expressed to the Irish Mirror that due to his upbringing, filled with prank calls and messages, he was initially doubtful. Eventually, curiosity got the better of him. He translated the original message and discovered a legitimate opportunity for an international call-up waiting for him.

It is widely regarded as the first instance where a LinkedIn message has led to a selection for a World Cup squad. While verifying this claim as a universally recognized first is challenging, no evidence to contradict it has been found in reports from the BBC, FIFA, or Sky Sports.

      From mortgage advisor to centre-back

Before football became his main career, Lopes worked as a mortgage adviser at a bank in Blanchardstown, Dublin, while part-time playing for Bohemians, a League of Ireland team that did not offer professional contracts.

A pivotal moment arrived when Glenn Cronin, a former teammate at Bohemians who had joined Shamrock Rovers’ coaching staff, invited Lopes for coffee with head coach Stephen Bradley. Bradley, appointed in 2016, offered Lopes a full-time professional contract, something quite rare in Irish football at that time.

“I’ve always aspired to be a professional footballer since childhood,” Lopes stated. “This was my chance.”

Lopes reflects on the irony: if he hadn’t attended college, he wouldn’t have created a LinkedIn account, and the invitation from Cape Verde would never have reached him.

While social media has transformed recruitment across various fields, football scouting continues to depend on agents, academy systems, and game footage. LinkedIn is typically not used for this purpose, which adds to the uniqueness of Lopes' experience.

A platform tailored for office connections, adapted for sports

LinkedIn boasts over a billion registered users, with its algorithms increasingly scrutinized regarding user data management. Designed for professional networking rather than scouting football talent, Aguas utilized the platform like any hiring manager would: he sought a candidate, reviewed their profile, and sent a cold outreach message. The distinction here was that the “position” involved national representation, and Lopes initially took it for a prank.

The 2026 World Cup features many technological advancements, from Google Gemini-enhanced fan experiences to biometric ticketing. Yet, perhaps the most poignant tech narrative from the tournament is a simple cold message on a professional networking site that altered Lopes' life.

      Cape Verde’s remarkable journey

Ranked 67th globally, Cape Verde qualified for the tournament by winning their qualifying group ahead of Cameroon. The island nation, home to about 600,000 residents, had never competed at a World Cup previously.

At 33, Lopes has become a central figure on the national team since his debut in 2019. He has represented Cape Verde in two Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, in 2021 and 2023, assisting the team to reach the quarter-finals in the latter.

His family, including his wife, infant son Diego, Irish mother, and Cape Verdean father Carlos, made the trip to Atlanta for the match. Cape Verde still has upcoming matches against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia in Group H.

“This chance to play for the national team has allowed me to connect more deeply with the culture and my identity,” Lopes shared. “I’ve cherished every moment of it.”

While the technology at this World Cup includes robot dogs, AI-driven sports broadcasting, and drone surveillance, fans are likely to remember the Dublin defender who was scouted through LinkedIn during Cape Verde’s debut.
