The touchscreen MacBook concept is beginning to emerge within macOS.

Despite Windows laptops incorporating touchscreens into the premium laptop criteria years ago, Apple has consistently avoided adding a touchscreen to the MacBook. However, this could soon change. Following years of speculation and reports about Apple potentially integrating touch input into its computers, the latest version, macOS 27 Golden Gate, may finally realize this long desired feature.

The initial beta of the new macOS has just been released, and users are already experimenting with its novel features. One significant change is the new touchscreen functionality available when a Mac is wirelessly connected to an iPad via Sidecar. Previously, with macOS 26, users had to use a mouse or trackpad while utilizing Sidecar. In contrast, macOS 27 allows users to control macOS via the iPad’s touchscreen.

This interaction extends beyond mere taps, as users can scroll through lists, select menu items, use pinch-to-zoom, and drag their fingers over lists to highlight entries.

Could the rumor of a touchscreen-enabled MacBook Ultra be true?

All of this lends some credence to rumors surrounding a new high-end MacBook Ultra model. Nonetheless, this remains speculation and hasn't been officially confirmed. A change in the Sidecar feature alone is not concrete evidence of upcoming touchscreen hardware. However, the timing is noteworthy.

The next high-end MacBook is rumored to feature a significant redesign that includes an OLED touchscreen, potentially M6 Pro and M6 Max chips, a thinner design, and a display layout that might replace the notch with a punch-hole or Dynamic Island-style cutout. While confirmation is still pending, Golden Gate could be the first public indication of foundational work for these advancements.

Golden Gate is also incorporating elements from the iPhone and iPad.

Another subtle hint in this direction is a recent report that notes macOS 27 Golden Gate introduces a "swipe down to refresh" gesture, echoing the familiar interaction found on iPhones and iPads. Apple is said to support this feature in various apps, including Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar. This indicates a growing convergence between macOS and iPadOS.

Apple's macOS 27 preview largely emphasizes enhancements in Siri AI, Visual Intelligence, Liquid Glass improvements, performance boosts, and compatibility with Apple silicon. However, touchscreen support was not prominently featured. Yet, the necessary elements for a touchscreen MacBook seem to be coming together. A touchscreen MacBook requires more than just hardware capable of detecting touch, and the software appears to be evolving to meet this need.
