Google Play Books is introducing an AI reading assistant that retains your last reading position.
Google
If you've ever picked up a book after a lengthy hiatus and found yourself unsure about half the characters in the early pages, Google has a solution for you.
Google Play Books is introducing a new feature known as Book Insights, an AI-driven reading assistant designed to keep readers engaged without straying from the page. This tool includes a “Catch me up” button that provides a brief summary of what you’ve already read, facilitating a smooth return to the narrative after days—or even weeks—away from it.
No more going back through chapters
Rather than flipping back through previous chapters to recall what transpired, readers can access a refresher right within the app. This feature is particularly suited for extensive fantasy books, mystery series, or any novel that gets disrupted by life’s interruptions.
Google
Moreover, Google isn’t limited to just summaries. Readers have the ability to highlight text and ask questions related to characters, themes, or context while they continue their reading. It's akin to having a book club buddy at your disposal, without the risk of spoilers or unrelated discussions.
AI becomes part of the reading journey
This feature exemplifies a larger trend of integrating AI into daily applications. While numerous companies are preoccupied with developing flashy AI assistants, Google is addressing a more specific issue: assisting people in maintaining their focus on what they're currently reading. For readers, this could be incredibly beneficial, as forgetting plot elements is one of the main reasons individuals abandon books midway. A brief overview or character clarification could be just the thing to encourage readers to keep going rather than quitting.

Book Insights begins its rollout today in Google Play Books. At first, it will be available for a selection of English-language titles, including thousands of free books. If it performs as promised, it could become one of Google's most practical AI innovations to date.
