Runway has chosen London as its European headquarters, announcing a £200 million commitment to the UK.

The Nvidia-supported AI video company has joined Anthropic and OpenAI in focusing on London, highlighting clients such as the BBC, Fremantle, and WPP. Runway has announced that it will establish its European headquarters in London and plans to invest over $200 million into the UK's AI ecosystem by the end of 2028, as reported to CNBC on Monday. The New York-based firm, recognized for its AI video tools utilized in film and advertising, becomes the latest American AI organization to make a significant move in the British capital.

This decision is partly influenced by the proximity to existing customers who already utilize their products. According to Anastasis Germanidis, co-founder and co-CEO of Runway, "London brings us closer to many of our largest European clients that are already engaged with Runway, including the BBC, Fremantle, and WPP, and it builds upon the research team we already have here."

The new center will enhance the research presence that Runway has been developing in the city rather than initiating one from the ground up. Notably, Runway is not a British company; it is based in New York and recently secured $315 million in a Series E funding round led by General Atlantic, valuing the company at $5.3 billion. Nvidia participated in this round, along with AMD Ventures, Fidelity, Adobe Ventures, and others. The involvement of the chipmaker is a common thread in several London announcements, as Runway also utilizes Nvidia's hardware for its new world-model projects.

Runway is aiming to advance its focus on world models. Initially, the company concentrated on developing video generation and editing tools, specifically the Gen-series models for producing short clips from text or images, but has since broadened its ambition to creating AI that mimics the physical world, with applications spanning film, gaming, science, and robotics. This direction positions the firm in direct competition with companies like Google.

Runway's expansion aligns with a broader trend. Anthropic is also growing in multiple European capitals, having recently announced office space in London for approximately 800 employees, shortly after OpenAI confirmed its first permanent office in the city. The attraction to London is driven in part by the talent pool, which Runway has specifically acknowledged, and also by the British government’s ongoing efforts to establish the country as a leading hub for AI research.

Runway is not the first Nvidia-backed company to make a similar announcement; in December, the video and world-model startup Luma AI also revealed its London expansion with Nvidia included in its funding. This recurrence can be attributed to Nvidia's strategic investments and a UK initiative that has been actively attracting its portfolio companies.

However, Runway has not disclosed the specifics of the $200 million investment, including the number of hires it plans to make or the timeline beyond the 2028 target. The company stated that it anticipates further expansion throughout Europe eventually, and for now, it has provided a city, an amount, and a timeline, leaving further details for the future.
