      Microsoft's Copilot Suggested Rename features an automated tool that analyzes the content of your OneDrive files and proposes improved names.

      Renaming files is a task that seems simple until you're faced with a folder filled with documents labeled Document1, Scan_04182026, and FinalFINALv3. Microsoft is addressing this issue.

      A new feature, Copilot Suggested Rename, is set to debut on the Microsoft 365 roadmap, with a rollout planned for June 2026. This AI-driven OneDrive tool reviews the content of your files and suggests clearer, more descriptive names, helping you save time.

      How does Copilot Suggested Rename function?

      This feature is integrated directly into the renaming dialog within OneDrive (on the web).

      When you attempt to rename a file, Copilot examines its contents and provides three relevant name suggestions in the rename dialog, allowing you to choose one with a single click.

      The feature also appears in the toast notification that pops up after you upload a supported file, enabling you to rename it right after it is added to OneDrive.

      Which file formats does it support?

      Copilot Suggested Rename is compatible with a variety of formats. It supports Microsoft Office documents, including Word (DOCX), PowerPoint (PPTX), and Excel (XLSX), as well as PDFs, Markdown files, and images.

      This broad compatibility covers most files that people commonly store online. Currently under development, it is a web-exclusive feature at this time, meaning it will be available for both personal and business OneDrive users on the web, with a potential rollout for desktop or mobile in the future.

      In my view, file naming has been a neglected, low-priority issue largely overlooked by desktop computing, and it can be quite frustrating on a larger scale. Microsoft’s incorporation of AI-powered rename suggestions directly into the OneDrive renaming dialog is a great place to start addressing this.
