Your Galaxy flagship might receive new software, but not all AI enhancements.

Major smartphone manufacturers are competing to transform phones into autonomous AI assistants capable of performing more than just responding to commands. Google provided a clear glimpse of this future at its recent Android event, and Samsung has been heading in that same direction with Galaxy AI. A recent leak indicates that Samsung may be planning a hardware upgrade that could enable more AI tasks directly on upcoming Galaxy phones.

This could be advantageous theoretically. Increased on-device AI might result in quicker responses, enhanced privacy, and fewer functions requiring cloud access. However, there is a potential drawback. If Samsung connects its forthcoming AI tools to newer Exynos hardware, some features might remain exclusive to future models like the Galaxy S28 series, while recent flagship devices receive only a scaled-back software experience.

What developments could Samsung be working on for Exynos?

Insider Jukan on X claims that Samsung is developing a hardware-level enhancement known as Multi Stacked FOWLP, which could enhance the AI workload capabilities of future Exynos chips. Essentially, this method merges Samsung’s vertical memory stacking with fan-out wafer-level packaging, potentially bringing memory closer to the main chip and facilitating faster data transfer between them.

On-device AI tasks must quickly process vast quantities of data. Improved memory access could enable features like image editing, real-time translation, summaries, and assistant-like actions to function more seamlessly without heavy reliance on cloud services.

This upgrade might debut with the Exynos 2800, though the Exynos 2900 is also a possibility. Given that the Galaxy S27 series is anticipated to utilize the Exynos 2700 in select markets, it is likely that the Galaxy S28 or S29 series will showcase this high-bandwidth memory configuration.

Could older Galaxy devices miss out once more?

Enhanced on-device AI hardware provides Samsung with a technical justification to restrict certain features to newer Galaxy models. Some functionalities may genuinely require quicker memory or stronger AI processing to operate effectively. However, others may simply serve to distinguish the latest flagship devices from models just a year or two old.

Samsung has already exhibited signs of this trend with the recent One UI 8.5 update. While Galaxy S25 users received the update, several anticipated Galaxy S26 features were omitted.

If Samsung continues down this path, Galaxy AI might become one of the biggest incentives for users to upgrade sooner than expected. Prolonged software support could keep older flagship devices secure and functional, but it doesn’t guarantee access to every major feature included with future Galaxy models.
