TikTok will soon have an ad-free option available for a monthly subscription fee.
TikTok has announced a new paid subscription service called TikTok Ad-Free for UK users, charging £3.99 a month (approximately $5.40) to eliminate ads from their feeds.
This week, TikTok will start informing eligible users about this option through pop-up notifications, with a gradual rollout planned for all individuals aged 18 and older over the following months.
What does the £3.99 monthly subscription entail on TikTok?
Those who subscribe to TikTok Ad-Free will not see advertisements in major sections of the app, including the For You feed. TikTok asserts that user data will not be used for advertising purposes, a significant aspect considering UK data protection laws require explicit user consent for the use of personal data in targeted advertising. By providing a paid opt-out option, TikTok can claim that users are offered a real choice.
It's important to mention, however, that even paid subscribers will still encounter posts from creators who are sponsored or compensated to promote products, which are typically marked with “#ad.”
This concept has been under testing since 2023, when leaked screenshots indicated that some users were presented with a similar option at $4.99 a month, suggesting a potential expansion to the US in the future.
For those who choose not to pay, TikTok’s free version will remain unchanged, with personalized ads still present, although users can modify the level of targeting through Settings. TikTok has not confirmed if or when TikTok Ad-Free might be available outside of the UK.
Is this the new norm for social media?
This development is part of a much larger trend in social media. Meta has been quietly implementing paid subscription options across its suite of apps, which includes Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp.
Instagram Plus is currently being tested in select regions, offering benefits such as extended Stories and insights into story rewatch activities behind a paywall. Meanwhile, WhatsApp, which has remained free for several years, is testing its own paid version called WhatsApp Plus, featuring enhancements like premium stickers, custom themes, and the capacity to pin additional chats.
While the essential experience remains free across these platforms, privacy and premium features are increasingly being offered as paid options.
