This Oscar-nominated revenge thriller ranks among the top 3 movies on Peacock that you should check out this weekend (May 8-10).
This weekend's movie picks on Peacock offer a curious blend, and that’s precisely the intention. Bugonia will have you laughing at inappropriate moments, Promising Young Woman will evoke anger over familiar injustices, and The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil will compel you to support a character you likely shouldn't.
These three films are quite distinct, yet they all have one common trait: none of the characters adhere to the rules, making each of these underrated films deserving of your attention.
Additionally, we have guides highlighting the best new movies to stream, top movies on Netflix, outstanding selections on Hulu, the finest free films, and the best titles on Amazon Prime Video.
**Bugonia (2025)**
- **Genre:** dark comedy, sci-fi satire
- **IMDB rating:** 7.4/10
- **Rotten Tomatoes (critics):** 87%
If you've ever found yourself deep in a conspiracy theory at 2 AM, pondering, “What if I’m onto something?” then Bugonia is the film for you. This delightfully chaotic dark comedy centers on Teddy, a paranoid beekeeper convinced that Michelle Fuller, a leading biotech CEO, is an alien from the Andromeda galaxy intent on annihilating humanity. Naturally, he decides to kidnap her.
What ensues is a tense, darkly humorous clash of wills featuring Jesse Plemons at his most disturbingly dedicated and Emma Stone, exuding a cool, menacing demeanor. The film cleverly satirizes conspiracy culture, corporate greed, and the appealing comfort of blaming others for the world's chaos. I particularly enjoy how the movie employs various camera angles to keep you questioning who the true monster really is.
You can catch Bugonia on Peacock.
**The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil (2019)**
- **Genre:** action crime thriller
- **IMDB rating:** 7/10
- **Rotten Tomatoes (critics):** 97%
Sometimes, the most outrageous premises yield the best thrillers, and this Korean crime film accomplishes that with great style. When a serial killer makes the disastrous choice to attack mob boss Jang Dong-su and leave him for dead on a rain-soaked street, Jang joins forces with a resourceful detective to track down the killer, each with their own motives.
Ma Dong-seok, recognizable from Train to Busan, is a powerhouse performance in this film, commanding scenes with his physicality and unexpectedly dry humor. The movie is fast-paced, stylish, and genuinely entertaining, featuring brawls that are choreographed enough to feel brutal without crossing into absurdity. I appreciate how the film refrains from portraying its protagonists as morally upright; both characters are morally ambiguous, and the film embraces that entirely.
You can watch The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil on Peacock.
**Promising Young Woman (2020)**
- **Genre:** dark comedy, thriller
- **IMDB rating:** 7.5/10
- **Rotten Tomatoes (critics):** 90%
This film lingers in your mind well after the credits roll. Carey Mulligan stars as Cassie, a 30-year-old medical school dropout who spends her nights at bars pretending to be heavily intoxicated, watching for which "nice guys" reveal their true colors.
While it seems like a thriller premise, writer-director Emerald Fennell turns it into something much more intricate, blending dark comedy, romance, and a simmering rage that quietly escalates until it erupts.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay, earning every accolade. I particularly admire how Fennell utilizes pastel colors and upbeat pop music to amplify the discomfort.
