Reasons for selecting the Supernote Nomad instead of other e-ink tablets.
The Supernote Nomad has turned out to be my favorite purchase over the past year, and I assure you, deciding to get it was quite a task. I was unaware of how extensive the e-ink tablet market had become, and every tablet I considered had at least a few compromises that I couldn't overlook.
After comparing and eliminating several e-ink tablets from my shortlist, I finally chose the Supernote Nomad. While it does have some downsides, there are five primary reasons why I opted for it.
I'm very pleased with my choice, as it's one of those devices that truly enhances my experience. In this article, I will share my reasons for selecting the Supernote Nomad over other e-ink devices in the hope that it may assist you in your pursuit of an e-ink tablet.
Bigger is not always better
When I first got an iPad Pro, I chose the larger 13-inch model, assuming bigger is always better. I was mistaken! Since my MacBook Pro is my main device, I prefer my secondary devices to be compact for easier travel.
I found the size of the Supernote Nomad to be perfect for an e-ink tablet intended for use while on the move. It has an A6 size with a 7.8-inch e-ink display, making it ideal for reading and note-taking.
It fits easily into my bag, allowing me to read for long periods without straining my hands. I also find it comfortable for jotting down notes. Sure, some might prefer a larger surface, but for the type of notes I usually take, the smaller size integrates smoothly into my workflow.
Additionally, I appreciate that the Nomad's design is symmetrical. Many e-ink tablets have a larger bottom or side bezel, which I find unappealing. While the top and bottom margins are indeed larger than the sides, they maintain symmetry, which I find visually satisfying.
Software is a standout feature of Supernote
One of the main reasons I lean towards the Nomad is its robust software. In my notebooks, I can create headings for quick navigation, mark important pages with stars and keywords, and even link to other pages within the same notebook or separate ones.
Then there's the Digest feature that allows me to gather quotes from my notes, PDFs, and books, and insert them wherever I wish. What's great is that these digests include links to the original sources, so I can easily refer back to the initial document with just a tap. This feature alone makes note-taking considerably easier.
Furthermore, there's handwriting recognition that functions entirely on the device, a sync feature that keeps my notes updated across my devices, support for stickers, intuitive gestures, a built-in drawing app, and much more.
Supernote also excels at delivering software updates and introducing new features, which means the tablet's functionality will only get better over time.
The screen and pen experience is exceptional
Supernote’s tagline, “For Those Who Write,” is spot on; it offers one of the finest writing experiences found on any e-ink device. Its screen incorporates Supernote’s FeelWrite 2 film, which has a textured, paper-like surface that provides a natural writing sensation.
When combined with Supernote’s ceramic nib pen, the experience resembles writing on real paper. No device, and I mean none, has come as close as Supernote in mimicking the pen-on-paper feel.
Just by placing the Supernote Pen next to an Apple Pencil Pro, you can instantly tell that the Supernote Pen feels much more like a traditional pen than a digital stylus. If you're seeking an e-ink tablet for handwritten notes, this is by far the best option I’ve tried.
No subscription fees, which I appreciate
I don’t know about you, but I’m weary of paying for subscriptions for every new device or app I wish to use. Therefore, discovering that Supernote doesn’t have a subscription fee was a breath of fresh air.
You pay for the device, and that's all. Whether it’s for on-device handwriting recognition, ongoing software updates, or cloud synchronization with the Supernote Partner app, there are no extra costs. There are no hidden fees buried in the fine print, which I appreciate.
Sustainability isn’t just a marketing tactic
Supernote also prioritizes sustainability and upgradability. You can easily access the device to replace the battery and even the motherboard. Similar to Framework laptops, when Supernote upgrades its processor, you may not need to buy a new device; you can simply swap the motherboard.
The Supernote Nomad even includes a screwdriver in the packaging to facilitate opening the device. Notably, all replacement parts are available on Supernote’s website, along with extensive guides to assist you in repairing or upgrading your device at home.
