Sony is set to produce a Metal Gear Solid film, and it has enlisted the directors of Final Destination for the project.
Metal Gear Solid is reportedly being given another chance at a film adaptation, and Sony is bringing in some new talent for the project.
According to a recent report, Sony is working on a Metal Gear Solid movie with Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein set to direct, both of whom have previously collaborated on Final Destination: Bloodlines.
Reasons for the excitement
Metal Gear Solid has always felt more like a film than a typical video game. Hideo Kojima took the franchise in intense directions with its stealth mechanics, intricate cutscenes, political intrigue, military narrative, and cinematic style. For many fans, it was never a question of whether Metal Gear Solid could succeed as a movie; rather, it was a matter of why no one had been able to make it happen until now.
Additionally, the timing is favorable. Game adaptations no longer carry the same negative connotations they did a decade ago. With the success of recent film and TV adaptations of major gaming franchises, such as The Last of Us, a Metal Gear Solid film now seems much more plausible.
What we know so far
Lipovsky and Stein, fresh off their work on Final Destination: Bloodlines, are expected to lead the adaptation under a first-look production deal with Sony. This marks another effort to bring a Metal Gear Solid film to fruition after years of stagnation in development. However, this announcement is still in its early stages, with no release date, casting information, or clear timeline for production yet available.
Nonetheless, for a franchise that has been mired in development limbo for years, this alone is enough to reignite excitement among fans.
