A new gaming subscription specifically for indie games has officially launched—and it's surprisingly budget-friendly.

Indie games have long faced challenges with discoverability. They often gain attention during their release but then fade into obscurity. Indie.io, an independent game publisher and platform, seeks to solve this problem.

The company is introducing Indie Pass, a subscription service dedicated solely to indie titles, priced at $6.99 per month. It will be available starting April 13, featuring over 70 games ready for PC play.

To put this pricing into context, Microsoft’s Game Pass Ultimate costs $30 per month. Indie Pass is a fraction of that price and concentrates on a specific type of game.

Jess Mitchell, Indie.io’s Director of Growth, explains that the games offered will generally be solo player experiences developed by small teams or independent creators, delivering a true artistic experience. The service does not include live-service or large multiplayer games.

What additional features does Indie Pass provide?

For gamers, Indie Pass includes a dedicated launcher and a recommendation system that analyzes your involvement and play style. It considers factors such as whether you use a controller or keyboard and even your location to suggest games that are localized for you.

You can think of it as a Steam-like algorithm, but specifically designed for indie games. Initial titles launching with the service include the cozy farming simulation Echoes of the Plum Grove, the tactical RPG Dark Deity series, and the farm-based shooter Air Hares, with new titles added regularly.

Why Indie Pass benefits developers as well

For developers, the main attraction is enhanced discoverability and revenue from their back catalog. Indie Pass compensates creators based on the time players spend in their games, following what Mitchell describes as an equitable model where subscriber funds align with player interest.

Crucially, Indie Pass is non-exclusive, allowing studios to simultaneously list their games on other platforms. “We are very committed to ensuring the success of developers,” Mitchell told GamesIndustry.biz. “Instead of sticking solely to traditional publishing, we seek to reinvest in solutions that help our developers gain further visibility.”

With over 20,000 titles reportedly released on Steam last year alone, standing out is extremely challenging. Indie Pass may not resolve this issue immediately, but it represents a focused, affordable investment in a community that warrants greater recognition.
