      The latest Android Auto update for Google Maps utilizes real-time traffic, elevation, and weather information to ease the burden of long-distance travel for electric vehicle users.

      For years, drivers of electric vehicles using Android Auto faced a significant challenge — having to look up charging stop suggestions on their phones and awkwardly compare them on their car's display while on the highway. While navigation wasn't an issue, the location and status of chargers caused anxiety for drivers. Fortunately, that problem has now been resolved.

      Google has introduced AI-enhanced EV trip planning in Google Maps on Android Auto, supporting over 350 electric vehicle models from 16 different brands. These brands include Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, Chevrolet, Lucid, and Volkswagen, among others.

      So, how does this feature function?

      The setup begins in the Google Maps app on your Android smartphone. Simply navigate to Settings, tap “Your Vehicles,” choose Electric, and input your vehicle's make, model, year, and trim. After this, Google Maps will recognize your vehicle.

      Once connected through Android Auto and a destination is entered, the app will show the estimated battery consumption for the trip. Input your current charge percentage, and it will suggest charging stops along your route, provide an estimated battery level upon arrival, and adjust the ETA to factor in charging time.

      No more adjusting your phone while driving to find a charger — Google Maps on Android Auto will handle that for you. There’s even an option to specify a minimum battery level upon arrival, which is quite handy since no one wants to reach a destination and immediately search for a charger.

      What drives the battery predictions?

      It’s powered by Google AI. The AI analyzes your car’s weight and battery capacity while cross-referencing live traffic data, including road elevation and weather factors. Think of it as a very attentive co-pilot that will consistently find charging stations along your route without any complaints.

      Despite the advantages, there's a notable downside to mention. The feature does not maintain a live connection with your car, meaning that range predictions rely solely on the information you input manually. Your actual driving habits are not yet taken into account. Additionally, you'll need Google Maps version 25.44 or higher to use this feature.
