Instagram may soon allow users to view Reels offline through automatic downloads.
A recent leak indicates that Instagram is developing automatic downloads for Reels, allowing users to continue their viewing sessions even without internet access.
According to a recent post on X by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, Instagram is working on a feature that would facilitate the automatic downloading of Reels for offline viewing. Initial screenshots suggest that the app may download videos in the background, enabling continuous watching even in the absence of connectivity.
The settings may offer some control to users, potentially allowing them to restrict downloads to Wi-Fi and set a limit on the number of downloads, with options for 10, 30, or 50 Reels. There also appears to be a download status indicator and a section where users can see all their saved Reels.
It remains unclear how Instagram will determine which Reels to download, but it might base this on user viewing habits or previously saved content. As with many early-discovered features, there's no certainty that this will be widely released.
Why is offline download for Reels significant?
While offline playback may not be crucial for everyone, it can be advantageous in areas with unreliable connectivity or for those looking to conserve mobile data. Instead of dealing with buffering issues, users would have a collection of videos ready to watch at any moment.
By providing users with continuous access to Reels even without an internet connection, Instagram could enhance engagement and encourage longer app usage. It's still uncertain if this feature will be enabled by default, but the company might provide an option to disable it, which would benefit users wanting to save storage or those not interested in offline viewing.
