Android 17 is set to introduce a new Contact Picker that modifies how applications access your contacts list. Previous reports hinted at a move towards enhanced privacy, and Google is now implementing these changes.

Rather than granting applications unrestricted access to your entire address book, you will have the ability to select which contacts they can view. In the past, apps commonly used a wide-ranging permission that exposed your complete contact list.

This led to sharing more data than necessary, often without your awareness. With this update, Android aims to minimize that exposure while simplifying the process for you.

How the new Contact Picker protects your contacts

The updated Contact Picker in Android 17 provides a secure, searchable interface for choosing specific contacts to share. Applications will only receive the information you permit, not your complete address book. This approach reduces unnecessary access and enhances your control over your data.

For applications designed for Android 17 devices or newer, existing contact pick requests are automatically processed through this new, more secure Contact Picker interface. This means even apps that haven’t been fully updated can still benefit from improved privacy protections.

Developers are also being encouraged to implement the new picker directly. It includes features such as the ability to select multiple contacts at once, making it more versatile than older methods. Apps can request only the precise details they require, such as a phone number or email address.

With this update, Android is transitioning from blanket permissions to more precise, user-driven access. For you, this means fewer apps silently accessing your entire contact list in the background.

This update not only enhances privacy but also establishes a new benchmark for how apps should manage personal data in the future.

Recently, Android unveiled a new contact feature featuring customizable calling cards, making it easier for you to personalize how you appear during calls. Google is also developing a tap-to-share contact feature designed for quick sharing of contact information between devices, akin to Apple’s NameDrop.
