Claude is now capable of managing tasks on your PC independently, without the need for a complicated OpenClaw setup.
OpenClaw made a significant impact when it debuted, proving that a genuine personal assistant capable of performing complex tasks on a computer is possible.
However, OpenClaw is not suited for everyone. Its setup can be challenging, and there are various safety issues, making it more appropriate for technically skilled users. A more suitable option for the average consumer is Claude Cowork, which Anthropic recently introduced.
Claude Cowork performs tasks on your computer similarly to OpenClaw, but it doesn’t require a complicated setup and is designed with security in mind. This feature is currently available as a research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers on macOS and Windows systems.
How does it function?
Claude Cowork can open files, browse the internet, navigate applications, and utilize developer tools effortlessly without any elaborate configuration. Once you grant it access to your files and issue a command, it begins its work.
Claude
Claude intelligently selects the most appropriate tool first. If there’s a connector available for services like Gmail, Google Drive, or Slack, it will use that option. If no connector is available, Claude takes control, managing your browser, mouse, and keyboard to complete the task. It always requests permission before accessing a new application or file, and you can halt its actions at any time.
Claude
For instance, you can instruct Claude Cowork to resize all images in a specific folder, rename files, or gather information from the internet about the best ice cream shops in your area, and it will accomplish all of that autonomously.
Can it be controlled from your phone?
Absolutely, and this is where it becomes particularly exciting. Claude Dispatch, a newly released app from Anthropic, allows you to send commands to the Claude desktop from your mobile device.
You can assign a task while at the office and come home to find it completed. Claude Cowork also remembers information, retaining context between sessions and gradually understanding your work patterns.
For developers, Claude Channels provide additional functionality. You can directly send events like chat messages or monitoring alerts into your Claude Code session from platforms such as Telegram or Discord.
Claude
You can also schedule tasks. Instruct Claude to summarize your emails each morning, compile a weekly report, or monitor industry news according to a set timetable. Claude takes care of these tasks automatically and notifies you once they are completed.
What does this imply for you?
Claude Cowork bridges the gap between the present and the future, where a digital personal assistant can independently manage our tasks. While there are valid concerns regarding AI, this development is both promising and beneficial.
