Google is eliminating the inconvenience of recalling SIM codes on Android 17.
One fewer PIN to remember
Google is developing a feature in Android 17 that may eliminate one of the most frustrating security measures on your phone. If you utilize a SIM PIN, you may soon no longer need to remember or enter it each time you restart your device.
As reported by Android Authority, this feature, known as automatic SIM lock protection, initially surfaced in the Android 17 beta and is now available in the latest Canary build.
How does automatic SIM lock protection function?
A SIM PIN is distinct from your phone's lock PIN. It safeguards your SIM card and is necessary when you reboot your phone or insert the SIM into another device. Without this PIN, your SIM cannot be used for calls, texts, or mobile data.
To enable this new feature, you need to turn on Automatic PIN management, verify your identity using your passcode or biometrics, and then enter your SIM's current PIN. If you haven't set one, you can use your carrier's default code, typically something simple like 0000, 1111, or 1234.
You can locate this option by navigating to Security and Privacy > More security & privacy > Protect SIM card. Additionally, you can view the saved PIN in the settings by selecting the ‘Show Android managed PIN’ option.
Once set up, Android will manage the process. When you restart your phone and unlock it, the system will automatically input the SIM PIN for you.
Why is this important?
The primary challenge with SIM PINs has always been their convenience. With multiple passwords to remember, retaining another code can be burdensome. Automatic SIM lock protection alleviates that strain while maintaining security.
Importantly, the SIM PIN will function as intended if your card is transferred to another phone. In that scenario, the PIN needs to be entered manually, which protects your number against misuse in the event of theft.
This feature is particularly valuable if you're concerned about unauthorized access to your calls, messages, or two-factor authentication codes. While it’s a minor change, it could enhance SIM-level security for everyday use.
