When Samsung emphasizes functionality, Apple's design influence often follows, resulting in the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro appearing more reminiscent of Cupertino than Seoul.

Samsung's wearable design team appears to have concluded that subtlety is overrated and is prioritizing functionality for their next flagship earbuds. Consequently, the Galaxy Buds 4 and Galaxy Buds 4 Pro might resemble their main rival, Apple's AirPods, quite closely.

Recent renders of Samsung's forthcoming TWS earbuds (via Android Headlines) are giving AirPods users a sense of déjà vu. Both the Galaxy Buds 4 (in black) and Buds 4 Pro (in white) exhibit a strikingly recognizable design.

A new yet familiar design aesthetic

Specifically, I'm referring to a long stem that hangs outside the ear, containing the charging points on the inner side and microphones located at the bottom, a rounded driver and chip housing, along with the open earbud design of the Buds 4, or the silicone eartips of the Buds 4 Pro (for improved noise isolation); these features are quite familiar.

There are also a few unique touches from Samsung. Notably, both Buds 4 models lie horizontally within their charging case, resulting in a wider, flatter design. Additionally, the cases present what appears to be a frosted, translucent lid, a choice that Apple is unlikely to attempt.

      Positioning against Apple's Pro lineup

In contrast to the Galaxy Buds 3 and Galaxy Buds 3 Pro, the Buds 4 series marks a significant visual shift.

Clearly, the standard Galaxy Buds 4 are intended (and should be marketed) to compete with AirPods 4, while the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro aim to rival AirPods Pro 3, which currently provide top-tier noise cancellation.

Regardless, Samsung's next flagship earbuds are expected to be unveiled alongside the Galaxy S26 series during the anticipated Galaxy Unpacked event on February 25, 2026.

Sony leak reveals new design for upcoming WF-1000XM6 earbuds along with significant audio enhancements

Sony's forthcoming WF-1000XM6 earbuds might redefine high-end wireless audio with AI-driven upscaling, enhanced noise cancellation, and a sleeker design just ahead of their launch.

As the anticipated launch approaches in the second week of February, key information about the Sony WH-1000XM6s has emerged online. According to the leak source Insider Sony, the XM6 may be the company's first earbuds to feature "DSEE Ultimate" audio upscaling technology. Powered by a MediaTek "MT2855" chipset, the XM6s are expected to support DSEE Ultimate, Sony's advanced proprietary AI-driven upscaling technology intended to enhance the quality of compressed audio formats (like MP3s or those streamed online).

A flexible AI chip thinner than a hair could enable wearables that function independently of phones

The chip has the potential to liberate wearables from reliance on smartphones or cloud computing.

Wearables are becoming smarter year after year, but most still depend heavily on a nearby smartphone to handle intensive processing. This dependency might soon end. Researchers from Tsinghua University and Peking University have recently created a flexible AI chip that is thinner than a human hair and capable of being folded thousands of times.
