Slop Evader is a browser extension that filters your search results to only display content published before November 30, 2022. This date marks the launch of ChatGPT, which sparked a significant increase in AI-generated material on the web. By installing this extension on Chrome or Firefox, your searches bypass the flood of AI-generated material and reveal the pre-ChatGPT internet.
How does it operate? Unlike DuckDuckGo, which scans for AI content, Slop Evader uses a date filter in your search queries to eliminate results produced after the specified date. This approach allows you to steer clear of AI-generated articles, synthetic media spam, and other subpar AI content in your search results. It currently filters searches on popular platforms where AI-generated content is prevalent, such as YouTube, Reddit, Stack Exchange, and the parenting site MumsNet.

Why is this important? Generative AI has led to a surge of 'fast content' that often lacks effort, is repetitive, or at times, misleading. This type of output can clutter search results and social media feeds. Slop Evader removes such content and provides an opportunity to rejuvenate the old-school internet with trustworthy articles and genuine human perspectives.
The benefits and drawbacks: Utilizing Slop Evader means sacrificing access to recent results. As a result, you won't see news, blog posts, research, or websites created after November 2022. For those who depend on up-to-date information, this is a significant trade-off, but the restriction is intentional. The creator, Tega Brain, states that the aim isn’t to permanently block AI content, but to encourage people to recognize how much synthetic information they typically accept without scrutiny (via 404 Media).
