A new version of Ubuntu, "Questing Quokka," has been released.
Canonical today introduced the release of Ubuntu 25.10 called Questing Quokka. This is the new stable version of the popular GNU/Linux distribution, which includes many modern components and improvements.
At the core of the system is the latest Linux 6.17 kernel, which provides excellent hardware support. The GNOME desktop has been updated to version 49, and the Wayland session is now the only available option for Ubuntu Desktop. This means you can no longer switch to X11 from the login screen.
Notable changes include the addition of new default applications. The Eye of GNOME image viewer has been replaced by Loupe, and the classic GNOME Terminal has been replaced by the modern terminal emulator Ptyxis. There is also an updated notification about available updates that lets you install them immediately or open the updater.
For NVIDIA graphics card users, support for Dynamic Boost technology has been added, and issues with resuming from sleep have been fixed. Owners of modern integrated and discrete Intel GPUs will also receive improved support.
An important innovation is the replacement of Ubuntu Report with Ubuntu Insights. This allows users to have more control over the collection of anonymous system information, which they can voluntarily send to Canonical. Image: canonical_com
Development tools have also been updated. The distribution includes GCC 15.2, Python 3.13.7, Rust 1.85, Go 1.24, OpenJDK 21 LTS and many other modern packages.
Ubuntu 25.10 is available for download in twelve official flavors, including Ubuntu Desktop, Server, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Lubuntu and other specialized editions.
Since this is an interim release, Ubuntu 25.10 will be supported for nine months — until July 2026. For those who prefer long-term releases, it is recommended to use Ubuntu 24.04 LTS or wait for the release of Ubuntu 26.04 LTS next year.
