The inaugural trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui garnered over 10 million views on the Chinese video-sharing platform Bilibili within the first 24 hours of its release by developer Game Science on Tuesday. It has now become the most viewed video on Bilibili, underscoring the strong interest from players for this upcoming title.
Why it matters: The announcement of Black Myth: Zhong Kui is considered a significant advancement for China’s gaming sector, representing the launch of the "Black Myth universe."
Details: Game Science has not yet showcased any demo gameplay for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, while it continues to develop Black Myth: Wukong. The studio is also expanding its team and has invited industry professionals to apply for new job openings, according to the company.
Yang Qi, the art director at Game Science, recently disclosed the inspiration behind Black Myth: Zhong Kui. He explained that the concept stemmed from a dream featuring a black-faced, red-bearded figure holding a tiger on a balcony. Further research revealed that images of Zhong Kui riding a tiger were prevalent in paintings from China's Ming dynasty.
In a casual chat with his friend Wei, Yang proposed transforming this vision into a CG (Computer Graphics) short, which ultimately developed into a new project. Yang mentioned that after a decade-long focus on Journey to the West-themed content, the team felt it was time to delve into different Chinese mythological and supernatural narratives.
In the comment section of the trailer, users on Bilibili largely expressed support for Game Science. Many are eager for a Black Myth: Wukong DLC but respect the team's decision to pause it in favor of exploring new topics. They also view Black Myth's presence at Gamescom as significant, noting that even a brief one-minute teaser could showcase the prowess of Chinese game development. Commenters emphasized that rushing is unnecessary; refining the main game while creating a comprehensive Journey to the West universe would yield even greater rewards.
Context: On Tuesday, Game Science unveiled the first trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui at Gamescom 2025. The trailer begins with an enigmatic, fog-covered scene where two small demons struggle to carry an enormous sword. Zhong Kui then appears mounted on a tiger, radiating authority and a divine aura. The entire trailer features high-quality CG, set against a dark, fantastical backdrop filled with mythological elements.
Zhong Kui is a traditional Chinese deity associated with exorcism. According to legend, he was a scholar from the Tang dynasty who died in despair after failing the imperial exams. He was later honored as the “Holy Lord Bestowing Blessings and Protecting Homes,” entrusted with capturing ghosts and subjugating demons. Typically depicted with an iron-like face, a bushy beard, a red robe, and a sword, Zhong Kui embodies protection and justice, serving to ward off evil, and frequently appears in Chinese folk art.
