Ethics-oriented smartphone manufacturers Fairphone and Murena have announced their newest partnership: the Murena Fairphone (Gen 6). This smartphone combines repairable hardware with software that prioritizes privacy.

The launch aligns with the introduction of the Fairphone 6, which operates on Android. The Murena edition replaces Google’s ecosystem with /e/OS, an open-source operating system aimed at reducing data collection.

Building on the legacy of the Murena Fairphone 5, which aimed for a 10-year lifespan and set a higher standard for sustainable electronics, the new device features an /e/OS operating system that offers improved privacy compared to Android or Apple.

The Gen 6 model is equipped with a Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, delivering better performance than the previous Qualcomm QCM6490 chip. It retains a similarly specified triple 50MP dual camera system. However, the new model's battery is smaller yet provides a longer lifespan, and it includes more durable Gorilla Glass 7i to safeguard the LCD screen. Overall, this version is 9% lighter than its predecessor.

Similar to the earlier model, users can replace individual components with just a screwdriver. The replaceable parts have increased from 10 to 12, which include the screen, USB-C port, and speakers. The smartphone is backed by a five-year warranty, though the companies anticipate that it may last 10 years or more.

Fairphone, based in the Netherlands, concentrates on the environmental and social impacts of hardware by utilizing conflict-free materials and designing devices for longevity. On the other hand, France's Murena creates operating systems and smartphones that provide a more private alternative to both Apple and Android.

Murena's "deGoogled" /e/OS eliminates Google services and trackers, replacing them with proprietary apps for email, calendar, and cloud storage. A recent 3.0 software update introduced new privacy features, end-to-end encryption, and improved parental controls.

This collaboration marks the fourth time the two companies have joined forces, starting with the Fairphone 3 in 2020, which Murena continues to support with software updates.

“We’re proud of our collaboration with Murena,” stated Fairphone CEO Raymond van Eck. “Together, we’re providing users with a phone that they can genuinely feel good about using — inside and out.”

The Murena Fairphone (Gen 6) is now available in the UK, EU, and various other European markets through Murena.com, with a starting price of €649. Customers in the US can pre-order, with deliveries commencing in August.
