Wordle’s takeover: The New York Times unveils a new puzzle game.
The New York Times has launched the next entry in its Games catalog, following the success of Wordle, and this one revolves around math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently try its beta version for free online.
In Digits, players receive a target number they need to match. They are given six numbers to work with and can combine them using addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers have to be used, making it a game that tests your math capabilities as you combine numbers to formulate the appropriate equations to approach the target number.
Players receive a five-star rating if they exactly match the target number, a three-star rating for being within 10, and a one-star rating for being within 25 of the target number. Presently, players can tackle five different puzzles with progressively larger numbers as well. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable number-focused game that should appeal to those who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other titles from The New York Times such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article revealing Digits and discussing The New York Times Games team’s development process, the Times mentions that they will utilize this free beta to identify bugs and evaluate whether it's worth advancing into a more active development stage “where the game is coded and the designs are finalized.” So, take advantage of playing Digits while it’s available, as The New York Times may discontinue the project if the reception isn’t favorable.
The beta for Digits is currently accessible for free on The New York Times Games' site.

Although it debuted in 2021 and garnered mainstream attention in December of that same year, Wordle exploded into a cultural phenomenon in early 2022 that was hard to escape unless filtered by a muted words list. It was a rare success story in gaming, capable of reaching a wide audience due to its elegant simplicity.
