Another esteemed Xbox exclusive is set to be released on PS5.
Xbox Game Studios
The acclaimed Xbox exclusive, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, is expanding its reach and will be available on PlayStation 5 this summer. Created by Ninja Theory, Hellblade II continues the journey of its main character within an intricately crafted setting inspired by Viking mythology and lore.
Dom Matthews, head of the studio at Ninja Theory, made this announcement today through a YouTube video. “Today, on the one-year anniversary of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II's release, we are thrilled to share some exciting news about the game,” he states. “We are very pleased to inform our fans that Hellblade II will be coming to PlayStation 5 this summer. This version will feature some new enhancements that will also be released for Xbox and PC simultaneously as part of an update.”
The first Hellblade game was initially available on PlayStation 4, but Xbox acquired Ninja Theory in 2018. The sequel was originally intended as an Xbox exclusive; however, the studio is excited to reconnect with its PlayStation audience as Senua’s story progresses.
Ninja Theory has not detailed what the new features will entail, but rest assured, they will also be available on existing platforms as part of an update alongside the launch of the PlayStation 5 version.
Both Hellblade titles have positioned themselves within a harsh environment and utilized this backdrop to delve into mental health themes. Instead of emphasizing extravagant gameplay, Hellblade II adopts a more narrative-driven style, presenting a tightly woven story that spans approximately seven hours of gameplay.
The game's emphasis on storytelling earned it nominations for Best Narrative and Games for Impact at The Game Awards, and it won awards for Best Audio Design and Best Performance by its lead voice actor. The implementation of binaural audio contributes to a unique auditory experience where different sounds are heard in each ear, enhancing the chilling whispers of unseen voices accompanied by Senua’s occasionally strained breathing, establishing the series as one of the most poignant portrayals of serious mental health struggles in video games.
