A flying car that can transform into a plane in just 80 seconds is expected to be available for purchase by early 2026. Slovakian manufacturer Klein Vision has revealed the Aircar 2, its first “production-ready” prototype, today. Co-founder Anton Zajac informed TNW that the vehicle will be priced between $800,000 and $1 million.
The original Aircar received significant attention in 2021 after successfully completing a 35-minute inter-city test flight. The Aircar 2 will feature significant advancements compared to its earlier version. Klein Vision has replaced the 1.6-litre BMW engine with a new 280-horsepower engine, which offers double the power. This change is expected to increase the aircraft's cruising speed from 170 to 250 km/h, reduce the takeoff distance, and enhance overall safety.
The new model will utilize a monocoque design for improved structural integrity. The Aircar 2 is engineered to convert into a plane in just 1 minute and 20 seconds—approximately half the duration of its predecessor. When in driving mode, with its wings retracted, the Aircar 2 can reach speeds of up to 200 km/h.
This flying car will have a range of about 1000 km and will run on petrol. Zajac mentioned that Klein Vision intends to transition to electric power "once the battery energy density is sufficiently advanced."
With a length of 5.8 meters, owners will be able to park the Aircar 2 in standard parking spaces. To take flight, they would need to drive to the nearest airport, activate a button to deploy the wings and rudder, and then take off. After landing, they could drive to their next destination. The car can reach a maximum speed of 200 km/h on roads.
The aircraft is the result of 35 years of development led by Slovak aviation specialist Stefan Klein. The first Aircar, introduced in 2016, has already accumulated 170 flight hours and over 500 takeoffs and landings, receiving its airworthiness certificate in 2022.
Klein Vision has already received pre-orders for the Aircar 2 and has "a few interested potential clients," according to Zajac. The company recently showcased the production prototype at the Living Legends of Aviation Gala Dinner in Beverly Hills, attended by notable figures including Hollywood actors John Travolta and Morgan Freeman, astronaut Buzz Aldrin, and Prince Harry. The Aircar 2 may also be offered in red.
Moving forward, Klein Vision plans to secure the European Aviation Safety Agency’s CS-32 certificate, which would eliminate restrictions on production quantities. The company, which consists of just seven members, is entirely self-funded. The first Aircar was developed at a cost of approximately $5 million, primarily funded by Zajac, a well-known tech investor. He noted that the company remains "open" to external investment as it prepares to increase production of the new model.
