The most recent episode of The Last of Us season 2 illustrated life in the absence of Joel (Pedro Pascal). Following Joel's shocking death in the second episode, last night's focus centered on grief and the ways the residents of Jackson will cope with this tragedy. Ellie, portrayed by Bella Ramsey, is particularly affected by Joel's passing, leading to an emotional scene involving one of his clothing items.
After her hospital discharge, Ellie returns to an empty house. She enters Joel's room and starts going through his belongings. When she comes across Joel's jacket, Ellie is overcome with tears. Ramsey shared with The Hollywood Reporter that this moment was the “toughest” scene to film.
“Oh God, that scene in the closet was the hardest for me,” Ramsey stated. “I have a hard time crying in scenes. I can manage to get a tear out, but that’s not the same as crying. Even managing to produce a tear is challenging for me. I typically don’t cry in front of others in my daily life, and very few people have seen me cry. So, performing that in front of a crew, with monitors and even more people watching… it feels almost impossible. I was really anxious about that scene; it was the toughest for me to film.”

Rather than dwelling on sad thoughts, Ramsey recalled the “happiest of memories” with Pascal to evoke an emotional response.
“The saddest moments for me come from remembering the joyful times,” Ramsey explained. “I thought about our first meetings and all the fun we had filming season one. I recalled those moments through the lens of losing him — not just as Joel and Ellie, but as me and Pedro — because my memories with Pedro are so closely tied to those of Joel and Ellie.”
In this episode, Ellie suggests sending a group of townspeople to Seattle to look for Abby (Kaitlyn Dever), but her request is denied by the town council. Nonetheless, Ellie and Dina proceed to Seattle. While on their journey, they come across a group of deceased Seraphites, presumed to have been killed by Abby and the WLF. The episode concludes with Ellie and Dina arriving in Seattle, as members of the WLF march through the streets.
