Tom Hanks returns to the naval battles of World War II in the sequel to Greyhound.
As reported by Deadline, Hanks will reprise his role as Commander Ernie Krause in the Greyhound sequel for Apple. Aaron Schneider will once again direct, working from a screenplay written by Hanks. Gary Goetzman, Hanks’ collaborator at Playtone, will produce the film.
The upcoming Greyhound installment will follow Krause and his crew after the Normandy invasion as they move to the Pacific Theater to turn the tide of the war in favor of the Allies. Filming is scheduled to begin in Sydney, Australia, in January 2026.
Some cast members, including Stephen Graham, who portrayed Lieutenant Commander Charlie Cole, are in discussions to return. Although agreements are yet to be finalized, Deadline indicates that there are high expectations for the main cast's return.
In Greyhound, Hanks plays Krause, a Navy veteran who steps into the role of first-time captain of the USS Keeling, with the radio call sign “Greyhound.” Greyhound and three other destroyers are tasked with escorting 37 ships carrying thousands of soldiers through the perilous Black Pit, a dangerous sea route leading to England. Lacking air support and with Nazi U-boats in the area, Krause must do everything necessary to safely convey these ships across the Atlantic during WWII. The film draws inspiration from events during the Battle of the Atlantic.
In addition to Hanks, the film features performances from Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan, and Elisabeth Shue.
Greyhound was released during the pandemic when theaters were closed. Initially under Sony Pictures Releasing and the Columbia Pictures label, the war film faced multiple delays from its originally planned March 2020 theatrical release. In May 2020, Apple TV+ acquired the distribution rights for about $70 million.
Apple TV+ premiered Greyhound directly on streaming on July 10, 2020. The film proved to be a significant success for Apple, setting streaming records for the platform.
While it may not reach the acclaim of Saving Private Ryan, Greyhound is an underrated war film, featuring a composed Hanks in the lead role. Only time will reveal if the substantial streaming audience will return for the sequel.
