The time when teenagers would lie about their age on Instagram is behind us. Meta has announced the implementation of AI-powered age detection technology to transition teens suspected of age misrepresentation into restricted Teen Accounts.

In a blog post on Monday, Instagram's parent company explained this AI-driven initiative, stating that it will utilize its existing technology, which has long been employed to identify the ages of users, to target accounts that may belong to teenagers who provided false age information to evade restrictions, regardless of whether they list an adult birthday. Instagram noted that efforts are being made to enhance the AI's accuracy in assigning teen users to Teen Accounts, while also allowing users to adjust their settings if their accounts are mistakenly categorized as Teen Accounts.

Besides employing AI for age verification, Instagram will start notifying parents of teen users with guidance on discussing the importance of accurately representing age on social media. Parents must have their own Instagram accounts to receive these notifications, which will commence immediately.

Meta stated, “The digital world continues to evolve, and we must evolve with it. That’s why it’s crucial we collaborate with parents to ensure as many teens as possible benefit from the protective features associated with Teen Accounts.”

Teen Accounts were launched on Instagram last year to enhance safety for users under 16 by reducing their exposure to sensitive content, such as violent images and reels promoting cosmetic procedures, and limiting who can contact them. Additional safeguards in Teen Accounts include making accounts private by default, restricting messages and tags to people they follow, and sending a notification to take a break after one hour of scrolling on Instagram.

Preorder the Light Phone III and save $200 (and maintain your sanity)

We're currently in a world where a significant number of people seek to "de-tech" their lives without fully abandoning technology. Compare this year's discussion about the benefits of basic phones to an earlier article from 2011 that suggested young people prefer technology over having the ability to smell. This leads us to the upcoming Light Phone III, available for preorder today, designed to simplify your life without being completely "dumb." It remains quite advanced but is crafted with intentionality, meaning it serves you rather than advertisers or the aspects of our brains affected by flashing lights and sounds. Preorder it now (with an estimated shipping in August) for a $200 discount, lowering the price from $799 to $599 by clicking the button below. Keep reading to discover why sometimes, less is more.

Why you should preorder the Light Phone III

Opposites create balance—light and dark, protons and electrons. The Light Phone III offers all essential features of a modern smartphone: a camera, alarm, timer, calculator, calendar, directory, navigation, notes app, and a straightforward music and podcast player. It includes GPS, Bluetooth, fingerprint ID, a flashlight, a noise-canceling microphone, and can even function as a hotspot for your other devices, all displayed on a vibrant AMOLED screen.

I compared Opera Mini’s AI chatbot with ChatGPT and Gemini, and I’m impressed

Opera Mini is a mobile browser with a legacy spanning decades, predating the advent of mobile platforms like Android and iOS. Its popularity has declined, especially as Google and Apple provide more sophisticated browsers, namely Chrome and Safari, which come pre-installed on devices. To cope with this competitive pressure, Opera—the company behind the browser—has implemented some unpopular features, such as full-screen banner ads and a sensational news feed. However, Opera Mini remains valuable due to its data-saving capabilities, which were once a significant selling point in the early smartphone era when data was costly and limited. Although issues like slow internet connections and data caps are now less common, we can still find ourselves in need, making Opera Mini a useful option.

This is Huaqiangbei, the world’s craziest technology market

One of my favorite places in China is Shenzhen. Established in 1979, this small fishing village north of Hong Kong has evolved into the heart of China’s technology sector, epitomized by Huaqiangbei. This district in Shenzhen has become the prime location for discovering the latest technological innovations, but it offers much more: it showcases an incredibly diverse and vibrant array of tech devices, accessories, and components.
