NYT Connections: clues and solutions for Sunday, April 20.
Connections is regarded as one of the finest puzzle games from the New York Times. In this game, players are challenged to classify a set of 16 words into four secret groups by discovering the relationships among them. The puzzle resets every night at midnight, and each new puzzle varies in difficulty. Similar to Wordle, players can track their winning streaks and compare their scores with friends.
Some days present more challenges than others, much like other popular NYT Games such as The Mini and Strands. If you're struggling to solve today's puzzle, you can refer to our Connections tips and tricks guide for helpful strategies or check out the hints for today’s Connections puzzle below. If you're still having trouble, we’ll share today’s answers at the end.

— The New York Times (@nytimes) November 3, 2024
You can play Connections on the New York Times website or via the NYT Games app on iOS or Android.
In Connections, a grid of 16 words is displayed, and your goal is to sort these words into four groups of four by recognizing the connections among them. These groups could represent categories such as names of video game franchises, sequels to book series, shades of red, or names of chain restaurants, among others.
There are often words that might fit several themes, but there is always one completely accurate answer. You can shuffle the grid of words to gain a better view of potential connections.
Each group is color-coded: the yellow group is the simplest, followed by green, blue, and purple.
Choose four words and click Submit. If you are correct, those four words will be removed from the grid, and the theme that links them will be disclosed. If you guess incorrectly, it counts as a mistake, and you have a limit of four mistakes before the game ends.

Who is in charge of editing the NYT Connections game?
Wyna Liu, who has been editing puzzles at The New York Times since 2020, oversees Connections daily.
“A few months ago, a new task came my way: Create the game boards for Connections, a category matching game that had just received approval and was seeking an editor,” Liu shared in an article discussing her process in June 2024. “Most of my puzzle experience has been with crosswords, and I was eager to try something new. I’ve enjoyed learning how puzzle editing operates once a game is greenlighted and observing how our team fits into a larger ecosystem.”
On the one-year anniversary of Connections' launch earlier this year, Liu shared this TikTok showcasing her favorite puzzles so far:
