There are constantly numerous rumors about the upcoming iPhone, with some surfacing more than a year before the expected announcement. This year, the iPhone 17 series is projected to be unveiled in September, with various reports indicating that design changes will be implemented for the Pro models, alongside the introduction of a super slim iPhone.
However, the latest report we are discussing isn't focused on this year's iPhone, or even the next one. Instead, it pertains to the 20th anniversary iPhone model, anticipated for release in 2027, which may include a folding iPhone as well. According to Mark Gurman’s recent Power On newsletter, as reported by Macrumors, the iPhone Pro that debuts with the folding iPhone will showcase a “bold” design that incorporates more glass than before.
Although this is still a couple of years away, the notion of Apple revamping the iPhone design for the 20th anniversary model isn't unreasonable. For the iPhone's 10th anniversary, Apple introduced the iPhone X, which eliminated the Touch ID home button and transitioned to Face ID, featuring a notch at the top of the display.
What might the 2027 iPhone Pro bring?
It’s possible that the 2027 iPhone Pro could undergo a significant design transformation similar to the iPhone X's change in 2017, while the standard iPhone may retain a more traditional appearance. Former design chief Jony Ive once imagined the iPhone as a seamless piece of glass, yet whether this vision will come to fruition remains uncertain.
With a few years remaining until the 20th anniversary, Apple has some leeway for the “bold” design that Gurman proposes. The iPhone 17 series is expected to be revealed later this year, while 2026 will likely see the launch of the iPhone 18 series. If Apple maintains its current naming convention, the 20th anniversary model would be the iPhone 19 series, although this could change, as naming it the iPhone 20 may be more fitting for such a milestone.
