Step aside, Wordle: The New York Times has introduced a new puzzle game
The New York Times has launched a new title in its Games catalog following the ongoing success of Wordle — and this one revolves around math. Digits requires players to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers. You can currently play its beta version online for free.
In Digits, players receive a target number to match. They'll be given six numbers with the ability to add, subtract, multiply, or divide them to come as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be utilized, so this game will challenge your math abilities as you experiment with combinations to reach the desired target.
Achieving an exact match with the target number earns players a five-star rating, while coming within 10 earns three stars, and within 25 grants one star. Currently, players can also access five different puzzles featuring progressively larger numbers. I completed today’s puzzle and found it to be an engaging number-based challenge that should attract those who enjoy puzzle games like Threes or other NYT titles such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article announcing Digits and describing the game development process of The New York Times Games team, The Times mentions that the team will utilize this free beta to address bugs and determine if it warrants moving into a more extensive development phase "where the game is programmed and the designs are finalized." So be sure to play Digits while it's available, as The New York Times might abandon the project if the response isn’t what they anticipate.
Digits' beta can be played for free now on The New York Times Games' website.
