Don’t overlook the LG B5 in 2025.

Last week, Caleb Denison and I had the opportunity to visit LG headquarters for a closer look at the 2025 models that were unveiled at CES in January. While WOLED technology has garnered much of the excitement in recent months due to its significant advancements, the G5 is moving away from MLA (Micro Lens Array) technology and the current three-layer structure—featuring a single yellow/green/red layer situated between two blue layers—and instead is adopting a four-layer stack with distinct red, green, and two blue layers. This kind of news is rightly making headlines in the AV industry, but after our visit last week, I find myself equally fascinated by the often-overlooked LG OLED B series.

The G series grabs attention as it introduces new technology each year and stands as the top OLED, while the C series offers an excellent balance of performance and price. Meanwhile, the B series patiently awaits its turn for recognition. Given the limited number of days in a year and the finite number of TVs that can be reviewed, the B5 certainly caught my interest and deserves a mention.

Improvements year-over-year are not as pronounced as they were five years ago. TVs, whether budget-friendly or high-end, are generally good. Furthermore, the performance advancements are noticeably impacting the lower-tier models. Take, for example, the unexpectedly affordable introduction of the Sansui OLED last year, or the newly launched Philips OLED Roku TV. A market that once was non-existent or not worth recommending now features several competitors.

Based on some data we observed this week, it seems that an OLED tier is trailing a few years behind the tier above it. Consequently, the performance of the LG C5 may be comparable to the LG G2, which would position the B5 similarly to the LG C2—a very solid OLED TV. Whenever people inquired about the best TV to purchase in 2022 (and even into 2023 before it was discontinued), the C2 was the straightforward and obvious recommendation. Even today, I'd still be satisfied with it, as are my friends who bought it.

During the initial presentation, we were informed that the B5 would come in an 83-inch variant and… that was all that was mentioned. No other sizes were included in the PowerPoint. Fast forward an hour, and we were observing a gaming demonstration on a B5 that was definitely 77 inches and not 83. After some inquiries, we learned that the B5 will indeed be available in sizes ranging from 55 to 83 inches—the key issue is availability. Smaller sizes will be offered through select retailers, but LG was not ready to disclose which ones just yet. We can expect that information in the coming weeks (or a couple of months at most).

Once pricing is announced (I don't anticipate the recently revealed EU prices to represent the North American B5 pricing accurately), we’ll have a clearer understanding of where things stand and how the B5 will compare to the Philips and Sansui OLEDs (or potentially something that has yet to be introduced). From what I observed last week, however, competition in the entry-level OLED space is about to intensify.
