Thunderbolts* will be the upcoming film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This diverse group of outcasts must join forces for a perilous mission that could lead to either fame or death. Yelena Belova, portrayed by Florence Pugh, is one of the members of the Thunderbolts. Unlike the Avengers, who are esteemed heroes like Captain America and Thor, the Thunderbolts have been overlooked by society. Notably, the film's director, Jake Schreier, comes from an independent filmmaking background rather than being a seasoned blockbuster director. This underdog perspective contributes to a unique tone for Thunderbolts*, which Pugh described to Empire as a “badass indie, A24-style assassin movie with Marvel superheroes.”

Alongside Yelena, the unusual team comprises Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and John Walker (Wyatt Russell). Julia Louis-Dreyfus reprises her role as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the brains behind the Thunderbolts. The varying backgrounds of these characters create interesting drama as they must collaborate. Schreier mentioned that films like Reservoir Dogs, Ronin, and Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol served as inspiration for showcasing mismatched characters forced to unite. He noted that a key scene from Toy Story 3 captured the emotional essence he aimed to convey in Thunderbolts*.

“It [Toy Story 3] wasn’t just genre-focused; it centered on the dynamics between characters. They all share that teamwork dynamic of being thrown together,” Schreier explained in an interview with Empire. “That [furnace] sequence is so effective because you've grown to care about these characters. Can they escape the trash can as a team?”

Thunderbolts* also features Geraldine Viswanathan, Lewis Pullman, Chris Bauer, and Wendell Edward Pierce. The movie is set to premiere in theaters on May 2, 2025.
