Next month will celebrate the 36th anniversary of Cameron Crowe's directorial debut, Say Anything, featuring John Cusack and Ione Skye as a developing high school couple, Lloyd Dobler and Diane Court. It is often regarded as one of the best films of the '80s, though the romance between Skye and Cusack was thought to be purely fictional.

According to EW, Skye's new autobiography, Say Everything, discloses that she had a genuine crush on Cusack during the filming of Say Anything. In an excerpt from the book, Skye recalls feeling something special when she and Crowe debated with Cusack about whether Lloyd should confess his love to Diane. Cusack casually remarked that he had never been in love until recently, which left Skye surprised.

"I was taken aback by that for a moment," Skye reminisced. "Was Johnny in love with me? As our on-screen romance developed, a real attraction blossomed too. I felt it constantly and knew he did as well, but we kept it confined to the film. Did he want something more? Did I? Was I in love with Johnny?"

Skye later discovered that Cusack was talking about his then-girlfriend, Susannah Melvoin. However, that didn’t prevent some tension when she asked him to say "I love you" for her, rather than letting Lloyd convey those feelings.

"We had a brief, exhilarating stare-down, and I thought we might kiss, but we didn’t," Skye commented. "That would happen later, years down the line."

Skye doesn't delve much into her real-life relationship with Cusack, mentioning that she felt it was something she needed to revisit after her divorce from Adam Horovitz in 2000.

"I had slept with Johnny after my divorce because I needed to move on, and it worked — now I understood we were meant to be in love only on-screen."

Though the relationship between Cusack and Skye didn't endure, Say Anything is currently available on Hulu, allowing their on-screen chemistry to continue to resonate.
