Modern Hollywood is filled with franchises, but unfortunately, many of them are inconsistent and disappointing. Fortunately, there is at least one franchise that consistently excels with each new film release. A significant factor contributing to this is that all the movies in the franchise have been helmed by the same director.
George Miller’s Mad Max series stands out, particularly with Mad Max: Fury Road and its prequel, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. If you’re searching for something to watch on Netflix this month, Furiosa is an excellent choice. Here are three reasons to check it out:
It doesn’t simply revisit the themes of Fury Road
Upon its release, Mad Max: Fury Road rightfully became a cultural phenomenon and a major contender at the Oscars. In contrast, Furiosa did not receive the same level of acclaim, which is unfortunate because it may even surpass Fury Road.
Importantly, this prequel adopts a fundamentally different structure from Fury Road, narrating Furiosa’s journey in five segments as she is taken from her home, becomes a driver for Immortan Joe, and ultimately seeks revenge against her mother’s killer. While the action sequences are spectacular, Furiosa is not solely defined by action in the same manner as Fury Road, which works in its favor.
It showcases two exceptional central performances
Charlize Theron’s portrayal of Furiosa is so iconic that it seemed impossible for anyone to match her. However, Anya Taylor-Joy rises to the challenge, and she is complemented perfectly by Chris Hemsworth, who is granted the opportunity to explore a much stranger character than most films allow.
In his role as Dementus, Hemsworth plays a power-hungry leader who stumbles through various positions of authority while realizing there is nothing left to fight for in the world. The climactic showdown between Furiosa and Dementus is one of the standout scenes of 2024, offering these two actors a chance to finally engage with each other.
It serves as a reminder of what big-budget filmmaking should aspire to be
Moviegoers will encounter countless choices in blockbuster entertainment nowadays. Still, many of the costliest films often feel like they are churned out from a production line.
However, Furiosa never feels compromised during its two-and-a-half-hour runtime. Even though it relies more on CGI than Fury Road, it consistently seeks out fresh visual concepts. While it includes plenty of desert landscapes, Furiosa knows how to reinterpret familiar settings from Fury Road to create something uniquely different.
