Lanterns is now officially in production. DC Studios has released a first-look image featuring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the upcoming detective series for HBO and Warner Bros. Television, inspired by the Green Lantern comic. Chandler will portray the legendary Lantern Hal Jordan, while Pierre takes on the role of new recruit John Stewart. In the released photo, the two are seen walking along a desert road; although not in Green Lantern outfits, Chandler is wearing a green ring.

Lanterns has been characterized as a series similar to True Detective, with Hal and John serving as “two intergalactic officers pulled into a dark, earthly mystery as they investigate a murder in the heart of America.” The cast also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, and Ulrich Thomsen.

Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King penned the pilot for Lanterns. Mundy, the showrunner, stated in a Warner Media announcement, “From the beginning, our main goal has been to create a layered drama – grounded in intricate storytelling and rich worldbuilding – that fuses tension and mystery with genuine, authentic emotion. We aim to develop a work that appears both timeless and grounded, while still embracing the magic of the original material.”

The directing team comprises James Hawes, Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov. Executive producers include Mundy, Lindelof, Hawes, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, and Ron Schmidt.

It remains to be seen whether Chandler or Pierre will make appearances in other DC projects before Lanterns. Nathan Fillion is expected to feature as Guy Gardner, a member of the Green Lantern Corps, in Superman. Gunn indicated that Lanterns is set to premiere on HBO around the same timeframe as Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which is slated for theatrical release on June 26, 2026.

If you enjoyed the acclaimed HBO series The Sympathizer, consider watching these three excellent shows immediately. Even though there’s a wealth of great TV available on Max, it’s rare for a master director to contribute to a limited series. Park Chan-wook, known for acclaimed films like Oldboy and The Handmaiden, is now directing The Sympathizer, a new limited series adapted from the eponymous novel.

Although this is not Park's first venture into television (more on that below), The Sympathizer is anticipated to be one of the standout shows of the spring. The narrative centers on a spy who relocates to a refugee camp in the U.S. toward the end of the Vietnam War, continuing to gather intelligence for the Viet Cong. For those who enjoyed the show and seek something similar, here are three options to explore.

DC Studios co-head James Gunn recently shared that he is developing an HBO Max animated series featuring the superhero team, the Creature Commandos. This project is part of the first chapter of his reboot of the DC Universe. In his remarks about the series, Gunn noted that DC would allow characters to transition between animation and live-action, often featuring the same actors voicing their characters in both formats, potentially enabling these heroes to crossover into live-action in the future.

The Creature Commandos are an unconventional choice for a superhero series, considering their relatively low profile in the comic book realm. Nonetheless, Gunn has a history of surprising audiences by elevating lesser-known characters like Peacemaker and the Guardians of the Galaxy to stardom. The team aligns with the theme of the first chapter of the DCU, aptly titled "Gods and Monsters." Still, it would be beneficial to learn more about this unique group of heroes ahead of their debut on HBO Max.

James Gunn has also recently revealed the films and TV shows included in the first chapter of his DC Universe, among them the highly anticipated HBO Max series, Lanterns, which focuses on the Green Lanterns. Peter Safran described it as "a huge, HBO-quality event," marking the culmination of a Green Lantern Corps project that has faced developmental hurdles since as far back as 2014.

According to Gunn, the show will center on two of DC's most recognizable Green Lanterns, Jon Stewart and Hal Jordan. In his announcement, Gunn explained, "We have a few other Lanterns included, but this will primarily be a terrestrial-based TV show reminiscent of True Detective, featuring a couple of Green Lanterns acting as space cops overseeing Precinct Earth." This series will be the first live-action project for the Lanterns since the poorly received 2011 film, so DC has many factors to address to ensure this series succeeds.
