Make way for a new puzzle game from the New York Times, following Wordle's success
The New York Times has unveiled a new title in its Games catalog after the ongoing success of Wordle—all centered around math. Digits involves players in adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing numbers. You can try its beta online for free right now.
In Digits, participants are given a target number to match using six provided numbers. They can add, subtract, multiply, or divide these numbers to get as close to the target as possible. Not all numbers need to be used, making this game a true test of your math skills as you combine numbers and create equations that bring you closer to the desired figure.
Players earn a five-star rating for matching the target number exactly, a three-star rating if they come within 10, and a one-star rating if they are within 25 of the target. Currently, players can access five different puzzles featuring increasingly large numbers as well. I completed today's puzzle and found it to be an enjoyable math-based game that should attract curious minds who appreciate puzzle games like Threes or other New York Times offerings such as Wordle and Spelling Bee.
In an article revealing Digits and explaining the process of game development by The New York Times Games team, The Times shared that the team will utilize this free beta phase to address bugs and evaluate if it should proceed into a more active development stage "where the game is coded and the designs are finalized." Therefore, make sure to play Digits while you can, as The New York Times may abandon the project if it does not receive the anticipated response.
Digits' beta can be played for free now on The New York Times Games website.
Wordle’s remarkable year: New York Times analyzes the phenomenon's significant 2022
If you logged into Twitter exactly one year ago, you likely remember when your feed began filling up with gray, yellow, and green boxes. Although it was launched in 2021 and gained widespread popularity that December, Wordle became an instant cultural phenomenon in early 2022, becoming unavoidable unless you muted certain words. It was a unique success story in gaming, appealing to a broad audience thanks to its user-friendly simplicity.
Wordle's popularity soared along with its user base. In late January 2022, the New York Times announced it had purchased the puzzle game from its creator Josh Wardle in an undisclosed, low-seven-figure deal—an unexpected move that nearly overshadowed Sony’s announcement of acquiring Destiny
