Google has launched a free version of its Gemini Code Assist tool globally, starting February 25. This generative AI model, previously tailored for businesses, operates on Gemini 2.0 and is compatible with IDEs like Visual Studio Code. This allows users to utilize Code Assist features directly in their working environment. It provides auto-completion for code as you type and enables problem-solving via chat or code snippet generation.

A notable aspect of this new free version, officially named “Gemini Code Assist for individuals,” is its usage limits. Each user can make up to 180,000 requests monthly, averaging over 5,000 per day. While these figures are significant, the number of requests utilized will largely depend on the type of project being worked on.

Code completions are counted as requests, meaning each time Code Assist offers a suggestion based on your input, it consumes one request, regardless of whether you accept the suggestion. Developers can produce thousands of lines of code daily, making it feasible to reach this limit.

Nevertheless, if your project is more complex or concise, you're less likely to hit the maximum. Additionally, if you plan to type a considerable amount of code manually and want to conserve requests, you can disable code completion until you're prepared to use it again.

Overall, the usage limits are quite generous, and you can derive substantial utility from the free tool, even as a full-time developer. In a blog post, Google compared its limit favorably to “other popular free coding assistants,” which typically offer just 2,000 code completions per month—like the free version of GitHub Copilot, Google's main competitor in this domain.

In conjunction with these requests, you'll also benefit from a sizable token context window, streamlining your work with extensive files by allowing Gemini to consider all of them when generating responses.

Google is also initiating a public preview of “Gemini Code Assist for GitHub,” designed to generate free code reviews for GitHub pull requests and recommend enhancements, aiming to facilitate quicker team reviews and more efficient changes.

To sign up and use Gemini Code Assist, a Gmail account is required, and free users gain access to all aforementioned features. However, for more advanced functionalities like productivity metrics, customized responses, or cloud integrations, the paid version is necessary.
