Suits LA quickly delivered a surprising betrayal that many shows might reserve for a season finale.
In the opening episode, Ted Black (Stephen Amell) is on the brink of finalizing a major merger with his friend and partner, Stuart (Josh McDermitt). The pair even shares a celebratory dinner for the upcoming deal. However, Stuart then unleashes a figurative knife and betrays Ted.
Due to certain legal loopholes, Stuart completes the deal without Ted, taking the firm’s leading clients and employees with him to establish a new company. Things worsen when Stuart teams up with Ted’s ex, Sam (Rachelle Goulding), to launch this new firm.
What prompted Stuart’s betrayal? Ted had previously insulted Stuart by calling him a “flea,” a slight that Stuart never forgot and sought revenge for.
Stuart isn’t the only one departing the firm; Rick Dodsen (Bryan Greenberg) also leaves after Stuart offers him the position of head of entertainment at the new firm. Erica (Lex Scott Davis) is offered the same opportunity but informs Ted, who then makes her a partner at Black Lane.
The premiere also delves into Ted’s life in New York. As a lawyer willing to do anything to win, he even resorts to blackmailing a witness to testify against a gangster. Tragically, that witness perishes in a house explosion, and Ted narrowly escapes this harrowing experience. In the wake of these events, Ted relocates to LA for a fresh start.
Ted also grapples with familial issues. His father (Matt Letscher) is dying, and he refuses to visit him. Eventually, Ted goes to see his father on his deathbed, which reveals another major twist: Ted's brother Eddie (Carson A. Egan), previously seen in the episode, is deceased. Ted only fantasizes about spending time with his brother, implying that his father may have had a role in Eddie’s death.
New episodes of Suits LA air on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on NBC and are available for streaming the next day on Peacock.
