For over thirty years, the fantasy franchise Magic: The Gathering has been a significant player in collectible trading cards, branching out into books, comics, and even video games. Yet, no adaptation of Magic: The Gathering has successfully broken free from Hollywood's "development Hell." Now, the franchise is set to receive another opportunity to expand into film and television.

As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, Legendary Entertainment is collaborating with Wizards of the Coast and its parent company, Hasbro Entertainment, to create a new shared universe for Magic: The Gathering in films and TV series, with a focus on producing a film as the primary goal.

Explaining the rules and nuances of the Magic: The Gathering game would take considerable time. The game, launched by Wizards of the Coast in 1993, quickly gained a global fanbase. In 1997, Wizards of the Coast became a major player in fantasy when it acquired the parent company of Dungeons & Dragons, TSR, and was later acquired by Hasbro in 1999.

If Legendary's approach to adapting Magic: The Gathering seems familiar, it's likely because it mirrors Hasbro Entertainment's earlier attempt with Dungeons & Dragons a few years back. From that initiative, only Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves reached theaters, but its box office performance fell short of expectations, leading to no further D&D films in development currently.

Magic: The Gathering has also faced several obstacles in Hollywood before. In 2014, there were plans for a feature film at 20th Century Fox, with X-Men: Dark Phoenix director Simon Kinberg attached as producer, but the project was scrapped five years later when Disney acquired Fox. Recently, Netflix engaged the Russo brothers to create an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering, but they ultimately left the project, which is now being redeveloped by Terry Matalas, the showrunner for season 3 of Star Trek: Picard.

Currently, there is no network or studio associated with the new Magic: The Gathering deal for the film or TV series.
