Numerous SoCs are being developed for devices set to launch in 2025, and a recent benchmark indicates that a MediaTek chipset may enable Chromebooks to achieve their highest speeds this year. According to a GeekBench benchmark, ChromeUnboxed has uncovered the recent performance results of the MediaTek MT8196 chip, which has been the subject of prior reports. This chip resides on a motherboard referred to as ‘Navi,’ and the benchmark demonstrates its strong performance in both single-core and multi-core assessments, along with GPU, NPU, and various other tests.

ChromeUnboxed notes that the MediaTek MT8196 is an ARM-based SoC, likely a reconfigured Dimensity 9400 designed for Chromebooks. Typically, this chip is a flagship SoC used in smartphones and tablets, renowned for its speed. Its primary rival is the Qualcomm Snapdragon series of chips.

In the context of other Chromebooks, the MediaTek MT8196 ‘Navi’ device has outperformed all of the currently fastest Chromebooks, which utilize the Intel Core Ultra 7. ChromeUnboxed highlighted the Acer Chromebook Plus Spin 714, codenamed ‘Karis,’ as an example.

The publication also mentioned that a potential drawback for the MediaTek MT8196 chip in delivering the quickest Chromebooks of 2025 could arise if devices powered by Intel’s Panther Lake are released first. Benchmarks for this SoC have not yet been published, leaving its performance uncertain in the market.

Nonetheless, Google is expected to start unveiling new Chromebooks in the spring, making it an exciting time to verify models and specifications. If the company follows a launch schedule similar to last year, there may also be a Chromebook introduction in the fall.

Additionally, there are reports of a device codenamed ‘Hylia’ that ChromeUnboxed has been monitoring, which may present a tablet form factor. However, the publication has not confirmed whether this Chromebook would utilize the MediaTek MT8196 chip.

Nvidia RTX 4050 makes an impression with initial benchmark leak

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 is likely to be the most budget-friendly GPU launched with the Ada Lovelace architecture, yet it is expected to deliver noteworthy graphical performance based on this initial benchmark leak. Someone seems to have assessed an early version of the laptop variant of the RTX 4050 using Puget Bench, a graphics productivity benchmark that emphasizes speed tests across several popular Adobe applications. The specific application evaluated was Adobe Premiere Pro, a leading video editing software.

AMD releases new RX 7900 XTX benchmarks, and the results are mixed

AMD was lacking in performance data when it introduced the RX 7900 XTX graphics card a couple of weeks ago. Although the presentation was filled with figures, they primarily came from unusual resolutions or esports titles that do not fully challenge top-tier graphics cards, or were obscured by FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) upscaling. AMD is now prepared to provide more details, giving clearer insights into how the new flagship compares—showcasing both good and bad news.

The company shared performance figures for the RX 7900 XTX and RX 7900 XT across four games: Resident Evil Village, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, Cyberpunk 2077, and Watch Dogs: Legion. The data suggests that the RX 7900 XTX might rival the Nvidia RTX 4090 in some games. However, the RX 7900 XT, although priced similarly to the flagship version, reveals a significant performance disparity.

All the reasons the new Surface devices fall short of expectations

We generally anticipate technological advancements with each new generation. After all, what is the purpose of releasing a new iteration of a product if it does not improve upon its predecessor? This was the question I pondered after reviewing the new Surface Pro 9 and Surface Laptop 5. While there are many positives associated with these latest Surface devices, there are also several ways in which they are actually inferior to the Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop 4. This is not what consumers desire from a new product launch, especially with competitors continually advancing.
