Zhongji Innolight is targeting an $8 billion initial public offering in Hong Kong.

One of the lesser-known beneficiaries of the AI surge is preparing to enter the public markets. Zhongji Innolight, a Chinese producer of high-speed optical transceivers, has begun assessing interest for a potential Hong Kong listing valued at up to $8 billion.

Bloomberg reported that the Shenzhen-listed firm received approval for the offering on Friday. It commenced meetings with analysts and investors on Monday and may start taking orders as early as this week, although the size and timeline are subject to change.

      Why this is significant:

Optical transceivers play a crucial but low-profile role in the AI expansion. They transform data into light and back, facilitating communication between the chips and servers housed within data centers. As AI technologies evolve, the demand for these devices increases.

Innolight stands as one of the leading suppliers globally. Its InnoLight subsidiary claims to be at the forefront of data-center optics and was among the first to deliver 800G modules in the industry back in 2020. It operates in the same picks-and-shovels sector as Eoptolink, a competitor preparing for its own Hong Kong listing of up to $5 billion.

The demand is evident from the statistics. Innolight reported first-quarter revenues of 19.5 billion yuan ($2.9 billion), nearly three times the amount from a year prior. Profits surged almost fourfold, reaching 6.3 billion yuan. The company's Shenzhen shares have increased approximately 430% over the past year.

The current structure of the firm arose from merging an industrial equipment division with its optics branch, InnoLight, based in Suzhou. A consortium of major banks is managing the sale, led by Goldman Sachs, China International Capital Corp, Morgan Stanley, and GF Securities, with Citigroup, HSBC, and others also involved.

The largest in Hong Kong since Alibaba:

If the listing reaches $8 billion, it would mark Hong Kong's biggest initial public offering since Alibaba raised $12.9 billion in 2019. It would surpass Luxshare Precision’s $3.1 billion debut this month, becoming the city's largest for the year, according to CNBC.

This comes as part of a notable period for the city. Hong Kong recently recorded its strongest first half for listings in five years, securing approximately HK$210 billion across 85 deals, as reported by KPMG. Analysts note that more than 500 companies are in the pipeline, with Innolight's offering potentially elevating the total for 2026 beyond the roughly $37 billion raised throughout 2025.

Much of this surge can be attributed to the AI market in China. Numerous companies linked to the AI supply chain, from optical components to memory producers, have swiftly moved to list in Hong Kong this year, alongside names like memory manufacturer CXMT.

      The downside:

However, the timing isn't entirely favorable. Recently, chip stocks have declined amid concerns that the current pace of AI spending might be becoming more difficult to sustain. Innolight’s shares are currently about 27% lower than their peak in June.

This situation raises broader questions regarding the AI sector and the risks of boom-and-bust within its supply chain. For now, investment is still flowing, and Innolight aims to maximize its share while the opportunity exists. The company has not responded to requests for comment.
