watchOS 27 eliminates support for many Apple Watch models, which is quite frustrating.
watchOS 27 removes the Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra 1, and SE 2 from its list of compatible devices, excluding models that were released merely four years ago.
At WWDC 2026, the typical array of software updates was presented, with watchOS 27 included. This update is expected to launch this fall, introducing enhanced Siri integration and new Apple Intelligence features. However, Apple also announced a compatibility cutoff that affects a considerable number of Apple Watch users.
Models excluded from compatibility
The Apple Watch Series 8, first-generation Apple Watch Ultra, and Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) will not be able to support watchOS 27. Consequently, only the Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, Ultra 2, Ultra 3, and SE 3 will receive the update. This indicates that Apple is now limiting updates to devices featuring the S9 chip or newer.
For perspective, watchOS 26 maintained compatibility with the same set of devices as watchOS 11, which included Series 6 and later, the SE (2nd generation) and up, and all Apple Watch Ultra models. Excluding three generations in a single update marks a significant departure from that trend, leaving users of devices that were fully supported only a software cycle ago without access to watchOS 27 when it’s released later this year.
Features of watchOS 27 for supported devices
The update will provide substantial new features for compatible models. Siri will play a central role in the watchOS 27 experience, alongside new Apple Intelligence capabilities integrated into the Smart Stack. A Dynamic App Grid will highlight recently used apps, and ID integration will be available natively on the watch. However, utilizing Apple Intelligence on Apple Watch will require pairing with an iPhone 15 Pro, Pro Max, iPhone 16, or newer to manage the processing requirements.
For users of the Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra 1, or SE 2, the new features will be irrelevant. All three discontinued models were launched in 2022, making them four years old when watchOS 27 is released in the fall, which is not a reasonable duration for a device that initially cost over $400. Apple has not clarified the reasons for this rapid compatibility cutoff or whether future buyers can expect similar exclusions.

Apple officially unveiled watchOS 27 during WWDC 2026, introducing one of the most significant updates yet for the Apple Watch. The new software adds Siri AI, extended Apple Intelligence features, enhanced fitness tools, and a revamped user interface designed to improve the smartwatch's functionality throughout the day. The update reflects Apple's broader initiative to integrate Apple Intelligence across its products. While the Apple Watch has primarily focused on health and fitness, watchOS 27 aims to enhance the device’s proactivity, contextual awareness, and capability for managing daily tasks straight from the wrist.
