Your old iPhone is capable of running iOS 27, though don't anticipate having the latest features.
Apple has announced that everyone can join the iOS 27 launch, but it seems it's more of an exclusive gathering.
Apple highlighted the compatibility of iOS 27 with older iPhones during WWDC 2026, which initially sounds appealing. If your iPhone is operating on iOS 26, it will also support iOS 27, meaning devices as far back as the iPhone 11 are included. However, the downside in the details is that many of the exciting features remain off-limits.
So, what can older iPhones actually access?
You won't be getting the exciting features. You will have access to user interface upgrades, such as the ability to customize Liquid Glass using a new slider that ranges from ultra-clear to fully tinted. Additionally, you’ll enjoy smaller enhancements like custom EQ settings for AirPods, AI-enhanced Safari tabs, quicker app launches, and faster AirDrop transfers. While these features are beneficial, they are not the standout attributes that Apple emphasized during the keynote.
What features are only for the latest devices?
Here’s where it hurts. To utilize Apple’s advanced on-device AI model, you’ll need either an iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone Air, an iPad with the M4 chip and 12GB of memory, or a Mac that has the M3 chip and 12GB of memory. The standard iPhone 17 isn’t included since it only has 8GB of RAM, while the new AI model now requires 12GB for optimal performance.
As a result, features such as enhanced dictation accuracy and the ability to modify the expressiveness and pacing of Siri’s voice are unavailable unless you have one of Apple’s latest and most expensive devices. Others will have to rely on a limited version using Apple’s cloud servers, which operates slower than the on-device alternative.
You might think this is disappointing—certain features of Apple Intelligence and Siri are exclusive to the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone Air, iPad models with M4 and at least 12GB of unified memory, and Mac models with M3 and a minimum of 12GB of unified memory. These features are restricted, for instance.
Additionally, some AI capabilities, like image generation, have daily usage limits due to operating on Apple’s servers. To increase that limit, you'll need an iCloud+ subscription, which also provides extra features for Home cameras.
It’s a clever marketing strategy. Apple can claim that iOS 27 is accessible to everyone while ensuring that the desired functionalities are saved for those who choose to upgrade. If you were expecting your reliable older iPhone to feel new this fall, it might be wise to lower those expectations.

Your comprehensive guide to iOS 27 compatibility and eligible models.
Apple presented iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 today, and if you’re curious if your iPhone is compatible, the likelihood is yes. Before the event, there were strong speculations that the iPhone 11 lineup would be excluded from software updates this year. Apple surprised everyone by keeping those models in the lineup.
The company also highlighted this choice during the keynote, clarifying that no additional models would be removed from iOS 26 support. This means that a total of 29 iPhone models will receive iOS 27, marking a first.
At this stage, it is well-known that Samsung is set to unveil a new Pro version in its flagship smartphone range with the upcoming Galaxy S27 series. The device, reportedly named Galaxy S27 Pro, has appeared in earlier leaks. Now, insider @kro_itnyang, known as kro on X, has disclosed information regarding its display and battery specifications.
As per kro, the Galaxy S27 Pro will feature a 6.5-inch display and a 5,000mAh battery. Previous reports suggested the screen might be around 6.47 inches, so this latest claim points to a nearly identical size.
