Lucid Gravity receives hands-free highway driving feature through an over-the-air update.
Lucid has started deploying UX 3.6, an over-the-air software update that introduces hands-free highway driving to the Gravity SUV. This update is currently accessible in the United States and Canada, but only for vehicles that have the DreamDrive Pro 2 hardware package, which is optional and not included in all Gravity trims.
The Hands-Free Drive Assist system manages steering, braking, and acceleration on designated highways while the driver remains in charge. It also features automated lane changing, allowing drivers to signal for a pass or letting the system determine the right moment to maneuver around slower vehicles.
Operational Details
The system utilizes Lucid’s proprietary sensor array and a driver monitoring camera to ensure hands-free control within mapped highway areas. The driver is required to stay alert, and the car will issue escalating warnings if it detects the driver looking away for an extended period.
This positions Lucid alongside GM’s Super Cruise, Ford’s BlueCruise, and Mercedes’ Drive Pilot for supervised hands-free highway driving. In comparison, Tesla's Full Self-Driving generally requires drivers to keep their hands on the wheel.
Additional Features in UX 3.6
The update includes adaptive high beams that can detect approaching vehicles and selectively dim portions of the beam to prevent blinding other drivers. The navigation system has also been enhanced with Google Maps integration, providing reviews, photos, and business information directly on the vehicle's display.
A new Advanced Preconditioning View shows the battery temperature relative to its ideal charging range. The display can estimate peak DC charging power based on the current vehicle status, giving drivers a real-time prediction of charging speeds at their next stop.
Importance of the Update
The introduction of hands-free driving has become expected for high-end electric vehicles rather than a distinguishing feature. Lucid's ability to deliver this through an OTA update, without needing hardware modifications, showcases the benefits of the software-defined vehicle model that Tesla has established.
The Gravity, which debuted in late 2025, is Lucid’s second model and competes with the BMW iX, Mercedes EQS SUV, and Rivian R1S. Although Lucid has faced challenges with production volume, the decreasing competition in the EV market may work to its advantage as rivals reduce or discontinue their offerings.
Lucid’s assertions are based on its official announcement, and no independent assessments of the hands-free system have been released. The feature is limited to mapped highway corridors, and specific coverage maps are yet to be provided.
Details regarding international availability for UX 3.6 have not been disclosed. Lucid indicated that it will provide separate updates for markets outside of North America.
