Apple’s latest AI photo feature can actually alter the position of the camera in the image.
Spatial Reframing utilizes Apple Intelligence to adjust shots post-capture
We’ve all taken a picture that could have been ideal if the camera was positioned slightly differently, right? Apple aims to correct that with Spatial Reframing, a new feature that leverages Apple Intelligence to virtually reposition the camera after the photo has been taken, using AI to seamlessly fill in any gaps in the scene.
Spatial Reframing employs AI to virtually adjust the camera after the image is captured.
As per Apple, Spatial Reframing merges on-device spatial models—developed with technology from Apple Vision Pro—with image generation models operated on Private Cloud Compute. Users can drag a photo during editing, and the perspective changes as if the camera had been physically shifted while taking the original photo.
Apple
Apple clarifies that only the newly revealed areas of the image are generated by AI, while the original content remains unchanged. The company illustrated this feature by altering a family photo, adjusting the framing downward to create a more harmonious composition while naturally filling in the background around the edges.
Apple
In addition to Spatial Reframing, Apple announced an enhanced Extend tool that can enlarge images for more breathing space or adjust horizons without significantly cropping the original image.
This could be the closest thing to a photographic time machine yet.
Unlike conventional AI photo editing that merely adds or removes elements, Spatial Reframing aims to recreate a shot you never actually captured. This is a much more ambitious concept, as it requires AI to comprehend the three-dimensional configuration of a scene before generating only the missing components necessary to support a new viewpoint.
Apple
If its real-world performance matches what was demonstrated on stage, this could easily become one of the most practical Apple Intelligence features introduced thus far. After all, everyone has dealt with a poorly framed photo at some point, and Apple essentially offers a second chance without requiring anyone to turn back time.
