Marvel's Wolverine showcases appropriately brutal gameplay as it targets a release date of September 15.
Insomniac Games utilized Sony’s latest State of Play to unveil an extensive gameplay trailer for its PS5 exclusive, showcasing that this game centered on Wolverine revolves around themes of blood, rage, and raw brutality.
The trailer features Logan carving through Reavers with his claws, executing stealth kills, performing airborne ambushes, and delivering execution-style finishers that splatter blood across the screen. The combat appears to be rapid and aggressive, allowing Logan to parry, close distances, and dismantle foes using techniques like Tornado Spin and Bull Rush.
The effectiveness of the gore hinges on maintaining smooth combat.
For Marvel’s Wolverine, mere violence won’t suffice. Acclaimed action games such as Devil May Cry and Bayonetta have established a high standard for seamless combat, fluid movement, and abilities that intertwine effectively. Even a comic-faithful, gory Wolverine game could falter if it devolves into a clumsy brawler.
Insomniac brings ample superhero action experience to the table. The studio’s Spider-Man titles received accolades for integrating melee combat, aerial maneuvers, dodges, gadgets, and environmental attacks with finesse. This is crucial here, as Wolverine needs to convey a sense of weightiness and ferocity exceeding that of Spider-Man, while ensuring that every strike, counter, leap, and finisher feels responsive.
The footage presented thus far is promising. Logan’s movements appear hefty without being sluggish, and his attacks flow quickly from dodges, leaps, parries, and finishers. The trailer also hints that Insomniac is granting him sufficient mobility and variety in abilities to prevent fights from becoming monotonous.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the combat system is the close connection between healing and violence. Insomniac indicates that attacks, parries, and kills build Logan’s Rage, which can be utilized for powerful attacks or to activate his Healing Factor. In practice, this recovery loop feels very true to Wolverine: survive by remaining engaged in the fight and dismantling enemies.
The trailer also presents Logan’s mission as a dark operation focused on capturing mutants. Logan is on the trail of Reavers, a cybernetic militia abducting young mutants for Bolivar Trask. This scenario evoke memories of Logan, where Reavers also pursued mutants, although Insomniac is crafting its own original narrative.
Jean Grey makes a significant appearance as a captured mutant and a formidable ally, employing telekinesis in combat to set up enemies for Critical Strikes. The trailer further hints at Mystique and Sabretooth through avatars and concluding footage.
Initial reactions on Reddit and X have largely centered on the gore, executions, and the apparent fluidity of the combat. Some fans are declaring it a must-buy on day one, while others are observing closely to see if the final product can achieve the smoothness characteristic of top-tier character-action games.
Marvel’s Wolverine is set to release on September 15, 2026, exclusively for PS5. The standard edition will be priced at $69.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition will cost $79.99.
