Siri may be years behind in the AI landscape, but the revamp in iOS 27 might still deliver a beta-like experience.
Apple is allegedly working on one of the most significant redesigns of Siri in years for iOS 27, but despite numerous delays, the upgraded assistant might still be released with a beta designation. Reports from Mark Gurman of Bloomberg indicate that internal testing versions of iOS 27 already label the updated Siri as a beta experience and provide an option for users to opt out of the Siri beta.
This approach would be reminiscent for long-time Apple users. When Siri first debuted in 2011, it was launched as a beta feature before Apple quietly removed the label in 2013. Nevertheless, Siri has continued to face criticism for its inability to match competitors in terms of reliability, conversational skills, and overall intelligence.
Apple's strategy to catch up in AI is taking longer than anticipated.
The updated Siri was initially set to launch in 2024 as part of Apple's larger AI initiative. However, various reports now indicate that the project has encountered delays of nearly two years.
As per Gurman's information, Apple is in the process of transforming Siri into a more sophisticated chatbot-style assistant that can manage ongoing conversations, maintain contextual memory, and offer deeper app integration. The redesign may also introduce a standalone Siri app, chat-like interactions similar to messaging applications, and integration with the Dynamic Island feature on compatible iPhones.
The challenge for Apple is timing. While the company continues to work on Siri, competitors like Google Gemini, ChatGPT, and other Android-based AI systems have already launched advanced conversational assistants with more extensive practical capabilities.
This disparity has increasingly made Siri seem outdated compared to rival AI products, especially as Apple continues to promote Apple Intelligence as an essential component of the iPhone experience.
The significance of the beta label
If Apple officially launches the new Siri as a beta feature in iOS 27, it could fulfill two roles. Firstly, it allows Apple the flexibility to keep refining the assistant in public after launch while managing expectations regarding bugs, inaccuracies, or missing features. Secondly, it permits the company to introduce AI features sooner instead of waiting for a more completed version.
The beta branding would also highlight the broader challenge Apple is facing in AI. Unlike competitors that emphasize rapid deployment, Apple has traditionally focused more on stability, privacy, and controlled rollouts.
Reports also indicate that Apple is implementing stronger privacy controls in Siri's AI experience, including optional auto-delete settings for conversation history.
What’s next
Apple is expected to share more details about Siri's redesign and its AI strategy during WWDC next month. Developer beta versions of iOS 27 will likely provide the first public glimpse of the new Siri experience.
However, a critical question remains whether Apple’s slower, more careful approach to AI can compete in a landscape where rivals have aggressively integrated generative AI into mainstream consumer products over the past two years.
At this point, Siri's overhaul seems less like a completed return and more like Apple just entering the AI race – still in development.
