The Force was nearly with A$AP Rocky.
The Grammy-nominated rapper had previously tried out for the role of Lando Calrissian in Solo: A Star Wars Story. In an interview with Variety, Rocky candidly discussed his audition experience for the Star Wars franchise.
“I auditioned for Star Wars, and it was terrible,” Rocky admitted to Variety. “I was not good that day.”
The part eventually went to Donald Glover, who is also known as his musical alias, Childish Gambino. Despite Solo receiving negative reviews both critically and financially, Glover earned acclaim for his portrayal, with Rocky being one of his strongest supporters.
“My man Childish Gambino was a much better Lando than I would’ve been at that point,” Rocky explained. “And I think he resembled [Billy Dee Williams] more than I do.”
Even though his audition didn't succeed, Rocky expressed his willingness to try again to be part of the Star Wars universe.
Released in 2018, Solo featured Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, a smuggler who eventually becomes a hero for the Rebel Alliance in their fight against the Galactic Empire. The story is set about ten years before Star Wars: A New Hope, detailing the high-stakes heist involving the Kessel Run. The film introduces Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo), Han’s future co-pilot, and Lando, the clever smuggler who provides him with the legendary Millennium Falcon.
Billy Dee Williams first played Lando in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. He reprised his role as Lando in The Rise of Skywalker.
In December 2020, Lucasfilm announced a limited Lando series for Disney+. Three years later, Stephen Glover, Donald’s brother and collaborator, disclosed that Lando had transitioned from a television series to a film, which is still in development.
Rocky will next appear in Highest 2 Lowest, a crime thriller directed by Spike Lee and starring Denzel Washington. The film is set to premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Highest 2 Lowest will be released in theaters on August 22 and will be available for streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 5.
Ryan Gosling is in discussions to join Shawn Levy’s Star Wars film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gosling is in negotiations to lead a Star Wars movie directed by Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool and Wolverine. As with most Star Wars projects, plot specifics are being closely guarded. However, this film will stand alone and won’t connect to the Skywalker Saga. The script is being written by Jonathan Tropper, who worked with Levy on 2014’s This Is Where I Leave You and 2022’s The Adam Project.
Gosling’s potential involvement is significant for Lucasfilm. If he commits, Levy's film will be the next Star Wars project to start production, possibly as soon as this fall. Should Gosling come on board, it would take precedence over a proposed reunion with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman for a film called Boy Band for Paramount.
James Mangold’s Dawn of the Jedi will not be constrained by Star Wars lore.
James Mangold is taking the phrase, "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away," to heart. Mangold's Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi will be a prequel set thousands of years before the events of the Skywalker Saga. He is looking forward to crafting a fresh narrative alongside his co-writer, Beau Willimon.
Andor is reportedly the most expensive Star Wars project ever produced by Disney+.
Andor is hailed as one of the finest Star Wars creations by Lucasfilm, and it comes with a significant budget. A Forbes report indicates that Disney has invested $645 million in Andor, with over $290 million allocated for season 2 alone. This sets a new record for Star Wars projects, surpassing the budget of over $400 million for Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
